Readspeed are offering a useful service to Vespa GTS owners who’ve lost their keys. This also applies to other Piaggio-group models that use the MIU Magneti Marelli throttle body with inbuilt immobiliser.
If you send the throttle body to Readspeed they will extract the code and make 2 keys to match (both blue and the brown programming key, for the exceptional price of £80 (or £70 if you mention SLUK when you contact them). They also have the ability to check the later type body with more connector pins used on ABS-ready models.
In order not to further add to the theft epidemic for these models, Readspeed will be requiring copies of the owner’s diving licence and log-book for their records, and they will only post the keys and throttle body back to the address on the driving licence.
Not all traders are this scrupulous – with many selling replacement CDIs for some models without immobiliser functions – in the full knowledge that the vast majority of these CDIs are used to get stolen scooters running…
Previously damaged locks or lost keys on many immobilised scooters meant repair charges in excess of £400 to put right, but for those with a legitimate immobiliser problem this service could come as a godsend.
