Morning after?
Although not many of us are stupid enough to go down the pub and sink a few pints before riding home, most of us will at one time or another have ridden home from a rally after binge drinking the night before. Undoubtably we’ll have ridden at least part of that journey whilst under the influence. That’s where this handy device might just come in useful.
The AlcoSense Excel is a £99 portable and accurate breathalyser, complete with a colour screen giving on-screen prompts and tips. It gives detailed readings down to two decimal places in either Blood Alcohol (%BAC) or breath (mg/L) alcohol concentrations. It will alert you when you are close to, or over your set limit. It can also be set to work with any alcohol limit worldwide and can be changed between limits simply and easily – ideal if you drive abroad on holiday, or between Scotland and England, for example, where different limits apply.
Don’t drink and ride
The device has a slide up cover to protect the blow piece receptacle, open it up and the area lights up presumably to help you insert the blow tube when it’s dark rather than helping to guide you in whilst drunk! It also features a re-calibration alert to remind you to recalibrate it after 12 months. There’s an overload protector to stop the device being harmed if alcohol is breathed directly into it (unlike some cheaper systems) and it has temperature compensation so it can be used in varying temperatures and still give accurate results.
Aside from giving you some extra protection before driving home after a heavy night out it could just save your own, or others lives “It’s not just about being under or over the limit. Studies show that if you drive while having only one-eighth of the English drink drive limit in your system (one fifth of the Scottish limit), you are 37% more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than when sober” said Hunter Abbott, MD of AlcoSense. “The only way to tell when you’re safe to drive the morning after the night before is either to abstain completely from drinking alcohol or to use an accurate personal breathalyser. The AlcoSense Excel gives detailed readings all the way up through the range so you can tell exactly when you are clear”.
