Have you ever felt the need to ride your scooter through five panes of 6mm thick glass? No, us either but that’s exactly what Austrian stuntman, Günter Schachermayr did this weekend to try and set a new Guinness World Record.

After gaining permission to use the premises of the Ratzinger brick factory and getting the help of one of the largest glass making companies, Eckelt Glass Solutions GmbH, Günter started his preparation and training for ‘Break Glass 5’ two years ago.

Quattrini power

The big day finally arrived yesterday. As Günter kicked the specially prepared 28bhp, Quattrini powered small frame Vespa into life the Italian national anthem played and military smoke grenades added some extra drama to proceedings. Günter accelerated from the ramp of a truck and along a 95-metre specially fenced off area at 12:15pm yesterday (March 6th). His optimum speed for the stunt was 54kmh.

As he sped towards the suspended panes of glass, Günter veered to the side at the very last second. He stopped his scooter and got off, seemingly to do a final check of his safety equipment and adjust his neck brace.

Breaking glass

Imagine the impact of hitting five panes of 6mm thick glass head on? I don’t think we can comprehend the force required to smash through them cleanly whilst trying to avoid crashing the scooter or cutting yourself to shreds. The right safety equipment and being mentally prepared for a stunt like this is very important.

Final checks

Satisfied all was in order, the Austrian freestyle Vespa stuntman rode back to the starting ramp, set off again and this time hit the glass panes cleanly with a massive “wumpssss” as the glass shattered into billions of fragments.

Günter hit the glass cleanly, smashing five individual 6mm thick panes in one go, sending splintered glass flying 40-metres. Leaving spectators picking shards out of their hair all around. That’s 30mm of glass, shattered by a scooter.

Smashing!

Günter managed to stay on the Vespa but overshot the braking area, you can hear him skidding to a stop on the video. After stopping in front of a cheering crowd he rode back to the crash point, turned the scooter off and screamed loudly “YES, we can. Done!”

The only minor injury was a bruise on Günter’s left index finger, caused by the impact but thankfully no cuts or other injuries. Although the Vespa was scraped.

The pictures, video and evidence have been sent to there Guinness World Records for verification.
