Italian innovators Casa Performance are dealing with one of my main bugbears with the Lambretta; the awful flywheel cowling design.
Never in the history of engineering (I’m exaggerating for effect by the way) has anyone come up with such a fiddly, awkward and fundamentally stupid design as the way an LI-series cowling fits. It was like someone made a special effort to hide screws in places that were difficult to access.
These new CNC aluminium cowlings, developed especially to fit the dedicated CasaCase mag housing (‘flywheel flange’) and to maximise airflow when used with their new CNC HiFlow fans for Casatronic and Varitronic ignitions.
OK, so it looks lovely and has been designed with the aid of Computational Fluid Dynamics software. I couldn’t care less.
What does excite me however is the idea that you can simply get the cowling off using a series of screws that face you, just like on a Vespa. There’s 15 minutes of my life saved every time I want to adjust the ignition timing!
Not just for CasaCase!
What about providing the same sensible fixing solution to owners of normal Lambretta engines?
Ah, well they’ve thought of that as well. We’ve had a sneak peak of a highly-innovative mag housing to fit Lambretta casings that offers several worthwhile advantages over standard AND accepts both normal cowlings and the CNC ones. More news on that soon…
Here’s the advertised specs:
- CNC flywheel cowling & flanges in electric blue, silver (and black added soon).
- The flanges are made to take either std. cowlings or CNC flywheel cowls with extra meat around all the usual suspect areas.
- They are principally made for Casatronic or Varitronic ignitions with lightened flywheels but all types can be used, although BGM flywheels do need their fins machining if used with the CNC flywheel cowling.
