For the sixth time, the all-inclusive annual winter event set in the confines of a former nuclear power plant on the Dutch-German border will mark the start of the season – melting together Scooterists from all over Europe. The organisers ‘Spirit of 84 Scooterists’ have tweaked it yet again…
For those who haven’t attended yet; the Meltdown is an all-inclusive scooterist weekender with hotels, bars, pubs, restaurant, clubs and the custom & trade show set in a new exhibition hall. A single payment of 219 Euros (£ 195) will buy you everything for the weekend; the hotel room, all the drinks (alcoholic too), all the meals and snacks, the dos, the live bands, custom show, dealers market, Dyno runs, raffle entry, competitions etc. However, the surreal setting and the all-inclusive concept is not the only thing that sets it apart from other events.
Many scooterists have begun making a mini-break out of the Meltdown weekend, so you now have the option to extend the weekend by one or two nights. The Thursday starts with a warm-up night in a small and cosy venue. Followed by the Friday with a big do, with four areas; main room playing scooterists classics, a live music venue, a Darkside room and the Ska/Reggae bar. The Custom & Trade show on Saturday is where Scooterlab chose to have their official launch two years ago. Today the show has grown to over 50 international exhibitors offering everything from new and used parts to competitions, entertainment, live music etc. including the obligatory free bar. Saturday night sees another big party with four areas. The Sunday is reserved for chilled activities like a bowling match or a cult movie in the sites own cinema.
Some of the highlights for the 2018 event in February include the first-ever public test rides on the Scomadi TL 400 prototype, drag racing on mopeds for everyone, a range of motorcycle engined scooters or the Major Power Awards. The latter are in quest of the most powerful scooters in Europe, free for everybody to enter. Get a free Dyno run to compete in one of these five categories; Lambretta, Vespa Large Frame, Vespa Small Frame, Vintage (pre-1958) and Torque. Apart from the prestigious trophies, the winners take home prizes worth several hundred pounds. Last year’s winners achieved some remarkable results; the most powerful large frame was a road going German PX producing 50+ bhp. The overall winner was a German small frame sprinter with 60+ bhp!
