You’ve got to hand it to them, the Germans epitomise cool when it comes to scooters. Not only are their machines subtly different to the ‘norm’ but the riders carry off the look with a kind of finesse and panache most of us could only dream of. Add in a spot of stunning scenery, an element of competition and a few beers and you’ve got yourself an event we’d all like to be a part of.  
 
What is the event exactly? It’s a timed 6.5 hour event called the Fenderlight Vespa Feeling and it comes a year after SIP customer, Frank Henkel held his “Trofeo Della Baveria” ride. Last weekend around 80 Wideframe Vespas met for Frank’s second Faro Basso Vespa Tour. This time around the stunningly beautiful area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, less than 80km away from SIP’s HQ.

Timing is key
 
 
The event is based loosely around a cycling style Audax, it’s a non-competitive long distance timed event where the participants have to cross the finish line as close to six and a half hours after they started as possible. The competition is all in the navigation, timing and competing against yourself.
 
 
Last Saturday 80 stunning Vespas and their riders met at the Eibsee at the Valley, station of the impressive new gondola for breakfast on the Zugspitze and to receive their commemorative hand-sewn goodie bag complete with a nice T-shirt, amongst other items.

Ralf from SIP took part in the event and said “The tour led from the Eibsee to Garmisch and Mittenwald to the picturesque village of Krün, the place with a typical Upper Bavarian historic wall painting that impressed Barack Obama at the G7 summit. Next we rode along the deep blue Walchensee over a village called Vorderriß into the beautiful Engvalley high up to about 1200 meters altitude, where the checkpoint was placed”.

 

“Somewhat below, directly at the brook, the pilots were able to fortify themselves with snacks and drinks and of course to discuss the experiences. Here in the so-called Ahornboden are thousands of partly over 600 years old, gnarled maple trees scattered across the valley – an impressive backdrop.”

 

“Partly via private toll roads to Mittenwald, Leutasch and back via Garmisch to the Eibsee. What a Ride!”

We’ll leave you to feast your eyes on some of these well preserved Wideframe Vespas, something we don’t see in such large numbers in the UK. Nevertheless, they’re a style that’s enjoying somewhat of a resurgence at the moment. Due largely to companies and individuals investing time and money into producing tuning parts to make them more usable in the modern world. 
 
 
With events like the ‘Fenderlight Vespa Feeling’ and remade parts becoming more readily available, hopefully, we’ll see more and more of these gorgeous machines on our roads in years to come.
