Yamaha has unveiled their brand new 2020 Tricity 300 this week in Tokyo and unlike its 125cc namesake, this one can be ridden on a car licence making it a direct threat to Piaggio’s MP3 300 HPE. With aggressive styling and Yamaha’s advanced BLUE CORE 300 liquid-cooled engine it’ll no doubt worry the Italians, who up until now have had the monopoly in this growing category.
Looking good
We’ll get to see the new Tricity up close in Milan early next month but first impressions of the new 300 are very favourable. It’s a completely different beast to the 125cc version (will that get the same new styling? We’d like to think so). The 125cc Tricity has always seemed a bit ‘weedy’ compared to the quite substantial MP3 and can’t be ridden on a car license – a major issue in a class where non-riders can traditionally take advantage of the three-wheeled scooter attributes but without needing anything more than a full car licence.
