Usually by now, we’re all chomping at the bit as the first National Rally approaches. Last-minute builds are being finished, new custom scooters are waiting for parts, we’ve got our rally bikes serviced and ready to go…
As you may well have heard by now, things are a little bit different this year and for the first time since 1981, there will be no Easter rally. VFM had to cancel our bi-annual trip to Whitby. That leaves us with a weekend to fill (in fact we’ve got lots of them) and nowhere to go.
Virtual scooter rallies
You may also have seen the odd virtual scooter rally page popping up on Facebook, particularly with Teignmouth last weekend. We’d already been chatting about doing something virtual for Easter with the three Dave’s behind newly relaunched Scooterist Internet Radio. That’s Dave Porter, Dave Lloyd and Dave Hampson. They’ve spent time and money getting all the gear up and working, buying the licences needed to operate and testing it all out in an effort to bring people together and to boost morale.
Modern tech
If you remember Tomorrow’s World from the 1970s they predicted we’d have video calls in the future, and they were right. Although it’s been around for a few years now, since lockdown services like Skype, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp have really come into their own. Tonight for instance, our scooter club are holding a virtual club meeting on Messenger. Scooterists around the world have also been spending time with friends (and family) without actually having to see them. This tech makes perfect sense for a weekend at home over Easter. Call your mates on group chat and share the experience, have a laugh, a few beers and a dance around the living room.
Party at home
Scooterist Internet Radio used last weekend’s Teignmouth rally to check out settings and video feeds for the radio show and to fine-tune things for their new regular shows. They were a little unsure if a virtual rally could work but as it turned out people really got into the spirit of things. Some of the photos and videos posted to the Teignmouth page had Scooterists loading scooters up and riding around their own backyards, others went to the trouble of setting a tent up on the lawn. Custom scooters were entered into a virtual custom show and many people reported not so virtual hangovers on Sunday morning.
I can’t believe it’s not Whitby
We want to do all that again for Whitby but on a much larger scale. We’ll be promoting it through ScooterLab and will be running a custom show through ScooterLab with the public able to vote for their favourites. Various DJ’s will be performing sets on Scooterist Internet Radio and you never know, we might even get the odd live act to play a set from their living room (if you’re in a band and can do a set get in touch, or if you’re a Scooterist DJ putting on a show from anywhere in the world let us know and we can add your link to our virtual rally timetable).
Rally patches
The official Whitby rally patches and pin badges were already made before the ‘real’ rally was cancelled but we’ll let you know how and where to get the collectors edition ‘cancelled’ rally patch. Pin badges and other rally/BSRA merchandise.
You can sew them on to your real flight jacket, or add them to your memorabilia collection after the virtual rally.
Traders needed
Lots of people will have been left out of pocket in one way or another, including the traders who usually do stalls at rallies.
