Here we are! After six or seven months passed in our sheds, it was time to start the scooter season @ the Vada Scooter Mare. It’s the first rally of the SIR 2016 calendar! Placed on the Tuscan coast and famous for the “Spiaggie Bianche” (white beaches), Vada is the perfect location for a big party! Drinkin’ n’ Drivin’ SC, in partnership with the guys from famous Italian allnighter Hang On, chose the famous venue “La Barcaccina” for both the event and night do’s. This is a beautiful beach bar with an amazing terrace upon the sea! For us it’s very close to home, only 60 miles away. We managed to leave from Siena early in the morning to enjoy the breathtaking roads around Volterra but, due to stormy weather, we left with only 10 scooters. An assortment of Lammies and Vespas from original to ratrod, with almost two hours of delays along the way.
We rode carefully on the rainy and winding country roads with just the desire to arrive and stay warm and comfortable under a roof! We got there at lunchtime and after quick salutes and handshakin’ we finally have our first full fish lunch! Lot of laughs and drinking, as usual, with other mates from Padova. Then after coffee and cigarettes we go and check out the scooters and some Innocenti Minis from the 60s, have arrived and are parked out in the rain!
We returned to Barcaccina to discover the terrace already very active with vinyl’s spinning, beers brewing and “ye good ol’ days” cheekie chatting! Fantastico! D&D also provided some vintage & classic British streetwear vendors to add some variety to the Afternoon! Already more than 150 scooter boys and girls from “Souls SC Parma, Hotwheels SC Siena, Roadrunners, Orsi Delle Alpi Rovereto, Black Roosters, Brutte Pieghe, Su Di Giri SG, Gruppo 70, Pessimi Elementi Terracina, Thunderballs SC, Vespagang Cagliari, Runnerboys and lots of others were now filling the place with the usual scooterboy camarderie we all love! Not bad for a stormy rainy scooter rally in Italy.
‘Time will pass you by’ sang Toby Legend and it was time to have a shower, a new fresh t-shirt and a good dinner to face the first allnighter of Vada Scooter Mare! The Saturday DJ’s line up was very varied, with Drinkin’ & Drivin’ Spinner, Gio, playing a specially brewed set of punk, powerpop and scooterist anthems. We danced without t-shirts, screamin’ and pogoing! The level of the tunes was very high with Bernardino Jamaican selections, local hero Gighe from BSV4 ,with Italian beat and nuggets of garage from the 60’s. Hang On’s Fulci and Barbara from Black Trefoil Soul club dropping classic northern & modern soul bombs till 4AM. Smash the disco! Finally, the lights came on and it was time to sleep for a few hours.
Sunny Sunday started well, we stayed outside the Barcaccina, seeing new guys from all around Italy arrive save and sound – except for a couple of breakdowns. It was time for a “pomeriggissimo” alldayer! Beers and cocktails were flowing and Beke Bauer shared some classic tunes from the 80s, 90s and 2000s, as well as Brit pop, 2Tone and Stone Roses related! Gighe chose R&B, northern and glam for us and the afternoon flew away fast as F*@k!
After a Good Pizza in Vada for dinner, we attended the trophy presentations, with ‘Best Scooterclub’ (won by our friends Hotwheels SC Siena), they also won ‘Best Scooterboy/girl’ and ‘Best 3 Scooters’. After this the allnighter starts with international special guests, Gerd from D-town Soul Club Dusseldorf (DE), Oleg MobKid Mironov from Moscow and Italian scooter scene heroes like Andy, D&D, Henry Lazzeri from Hang On/Milano mods and Nicole ‘Ancilla’ Barbieri playing some rare soul and mod sounds from the sixties as well as rocksteady, boss sounds and obviously northern and modern gems till 4 AM. Ass-shakin, feet stomping and hard drinkin’ left us very tired but not bored!
After four hours sleep we pack the luggage and set off home but after a few km’s my mate Mimmo breaks his TS1 exhaust manifold, so it was time for a bodged repair on the road using a Coke can, a few metal straps and, believe me or not, some tinfoil!
I want to say thanks to: D&D and Hang On mates for the maniacal organization, all the radical scooterists, mods, skins and also to the new breed of 20 years old mod/modette’s, who attempted this rally in the stormy weather. Keep the faith & keep on rollin’! See ya @ the 1st Gruppo 70 rally on 21 May!
