Although Aprilia may have dropped off the European scooter radar, the Piaggio-owned brand have just received their third prestigious accolade for their locally produced, Indian market SXR 160 scooter.

The machine had already scooped ‘Best 2 Wheeler’ at Auto Expo 2020 and ‘2021 Scooter of the Year’ by the BBC’s highly regarded TV show – Top Gear India. Now it’s been awarded ‘2021 Scooter of the Year’ by the well-respected magazine at the Autocar Awards 2021.

At a ceremony in New Delhi earlier this week a jury of experts noted that the Aprilia SXR 160 has “A unique combination of style, performance and comfort, and also stands apart from its competitors in terms of the quality of its finishes.”

Two capacities

The scooter comes in a choice of two capacities. 160cc and 125cc. The 3V Tech FI engine is compliant with the Bharat Stage V1 emissions standard. The scooter features an ergonomic riding position, large comfortable seat, flat floorboards, LED lights, a multi-function digital display, ABS and 12-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels.

Piaggio India CEO Diego Graffi commented, “Launched on the Indian market only in January – and in Nepal a few weeks ago – the Aprilia SXR 160 has rapidly achieved enormous success, gaining an important position in the premium scooter segment. This recognition confirms the quality and competitiveness of our product in India, a strategic market for the Piaggio Group, and demonstrates the Group’s excellent reactivity and great growth potential.”

Whether we see Aprilia scooters making a comeback in the UK or not remains to be seen…
