We don’t claim to be experts on Modernism here at SLUK, because we aren’t Mods, but we know enough to doff a cap to the original scooter youth cult.
We are also able to recognise the difference between people who live with their chosen style 24/7 and those who dress up for the weekend.
Emma-Rose Dias short film – narrated by Paul Weller – is a classically handsome look at modern 60s Stylists.
There is an old argument that if Mod meant modernist then they’d wear the latest styles (“I’ve got to move with the fashions or be outcast” – Quadrophenia, The Who).

Brighton NUTS weekend this past August BH a case in point.
The Comedy Mods were out in force and I had made up some prize rosettes to hand out to the best of the worst. Many so called originals being the worst, tasteless offenders with every inch of their scooter covered in bathroom fittings and every inch of their camping shop parka covered in Mods and Who patches. I guess they never got it the first time round and wereTickets back in the day. Still, they enjoy what they do. Fair play…but I reserve the right to take the piss.
One of the most stylish Modern Mods I saw there was riding a new V Sprint in yellow and had on a sharp outfit that did not look like typical weekend costume. They looked like they wore it anytime of the week. Cool as F! They had the Devil in the Detail.
Fat bellied middle aged farts busting buttons on boating blazers, riding PXs bedecked in its weight again in shiny tat need not apply. Discuss.
