Council road-worker Ricky Hayden, aged 27 is the latest victim of the wave of scooter crime covering London and the south-east.
Ricky, who sometimes worked as a celebrity bodyguard along with his father, came down to confront a group of four youths who were attempting to steal his scooter from outside the family home in Chadwell Heath on the Essex border. The incident happened at 1:25am on Tuesday morning.
According to reports in the Evening Standard, Ricky was set about by the robbers using machetes. His father, Paul, came down to defend him and was also attacked and injured before the robbers left empty-handed.
Ricky was a member of both Gilera Runner Parts and Piaggio Typhoon owners club groups on Facebook, as well as a follower of Pedparts; which suggests his scooter was more than a mere ‘moped’ and possibly a high-value tuned auto.
The scooter was clearly high-value enough for the thieves to risk stealing it from a doorman, and a risky enough job that they felt the need to be heavily armed. However it certainly wasn’t worth anyone dying for.
Latest reports are that two suspects have been arrested and charged with murder and are being held in East London police stations.
