UNI Auto’s diecast Lambretta 200 casing
UNI Auto in India have just cast their first band new Lambretta 200 casing, fresh from newly-developed injection mould tooling.
This is a massive investment for the future of standard Lambretta components because in recent years the supply of genuine casings from SIL has been patchy to say the least and the quality of machining has been notoriously poor.
The cost of making die cast tooling is extremely high, but it offers several advantages:
- Smoother, more original-looking castings
- Vastly reduced unit costs
- Greater product consistency than hand-assembled sand cores
The casing that UNI are producing is aimed to be 100% compatible with original Lambretta components. They will be supplied with a new SIL GP-style gearbox endplate.
If the final production is as good as the side casings that they’ve made, then it looks like a promising product for the standard and lower performance level end of the market, particularly if the final price is right.

What is the right price going to be?
At the moment we have UK retailers selling end of line batches of SIL casings (complete with gearbox endplate) for £550.
On the other hand the many new high performance sand-cast casings (see our Casing Wars article) from the likes of Casa Performance, Gran Turismo and Tino Sacchi are starting from around the £765 mark upwards (depending on which extras are included).
Given that gap, and the enormous investment involved, we’d expect the UNI casings to be somewhere between those prices, hopefully at the lower end.
When will it be available?
Manish from UNI Auto tells us, “if all goes as per schedule, these could be shipped from India by the end of March 2017.”
Where will these be available?
In the UK they will be supplied by TSR (The Scooter Republic) and also through AF Rayspeed.

Manish Mittal from UNI Auto; “the casing price is still to be decided, but definitely affordable!”
