The South West Scooter Club’s rally at Mill Rythe Holiday Village on Hayling Island near Portsmouth is now well established and is fast becoming a highlight of the south coast’s rally calendar.

  As usual, I leave my packing until the last moment, but for this rally it’s no biggie as if I forget something I’m only eight miles from home in good ol’ Pompey! Although I’m close to home I always stay on site, as once there I can park the scoot up and enjoy the sun, as well as a beer or three.

    Limited edition   The rally is now so popular that when the accommodation goes on sale the 650 spaces go within a couple of hours, so a lot of people choose to camp at the local sites dotted within walking (or drunkenly swaying depending on which direction you’re going) distance of the rally.     As it’s an SWSC rally the first riders receive a limited edition riders patch, and although this is a chalet rally the 300 riders patches had been handed out by 16.30 (two and a half hours after the gates had opened) with many more disappointed as the day progressed.

    The weather on Friday, although warm was a little cloudy, so instead of heading straight to the bar, a fair few stayed in their chalets for the afternoon, though as the day turned to evening everyone started to head out to the venue, first for dinner (evening meals and breakfasts are included in the accommodation price) then to soak up the food with a few beers.     The band on Friday was Southampton based The Butterfly Collective, playing a varied mix of 60s and revival mod covers with power and verve, all of which went down a storm.

  Sun hat   Saturday daytime brought the custom show, parts fair, ride out and the SUN! The sun certainly had his hat on for the rest of the weekend, I even heard people complaining it was too hot! (are we ever pleased?) Saturday afternoon had The Corsairs playing outside to a very appreciative audience, they play just about everything, but with a deranged psychobilly beat. If you haven’t seen them you have to, they are fantastic – yes I am a fan.     Saturday night’s band was Special Brew, a Bad Manners tribute band in case you hadn’t guessed, but a very good one, they even had me dancing to the Can Can, fortunately, I had a friend holding on to me at the time, otherwise, it might have ended in Tears!

  After the band, or maybe before, my memory’s a little hazy (drunk, me. Never!) we headed over to the Northern Soul room, enjoyed the music and more drink before finally heading off to bed.     This was as always an excellent rally (SWSC know how to put on a do), and frankly, I can’t wait for next year’s.     Words and photos: Booga
