We’ve got a fair few anoraks in the scooter scene and no doubt we have a few philatelists as well. Combine scooters and special edition commemorative stamps and you’re on to a winner.
That’s what the Isle of Man Post Office has done to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Manx International Motor Scooter Rally. Appearing on stamps is a far cry from how we were perceived in 1981 when the IOM executive Council banned scooters travelling to the island after trouble on the mainland. That ban was only overturned as recently as 2002.
Years later history is forgotten and we’re welcomed to towns, islands and seaside resorts with open cash registers. In fact later this month the Isle of Man will be hosting their annual scooter rally (giving you the perfect opportunity to collect a set of these stamps in person).

Scooter Mania!
The eight-stamp collection was put together with the help of Manx based, Scooter Mania! author, Steve Jackson. Steve’s first rally was Morecambe 1984 and he was a member of clubs in Birmingham, London and Devon before relocating to the Isle of Man in 2008. Steve was inspired by the rich scooter heritage of the island and the archives held in the Manx Museum, which lead him to write Scooter Mania! Recollections of the Isle of man International Scooter Rally in 2014.
