On the weekend of the 18th to the 19thof May as many people in the country geared up to watch the FA Cup or some Wedding in Windsor, around a thousand or so scooterists made their way down to sunny Cornwall. The Troglodytes, Section 8 and the Southern Templars have been successfully running ‘The Run From the Scum’ for some years now, first at Newquay and last year they moved it to Looe in Cornwall.
It was based at Tencreek Holiday Park, which is about a mile and a half up the windy road from the town of Looe. It’s a caravan and camping park and was shared with the camps regulars and all the caravans sold out quickly but plenty of people were still able to get on with their tents just like a regular rally. It’s a nice little site, very clean and it had a shop and a well-manned bar with ok prices, unlike some venues and you could get food and they did an all you can eat buffet breakfast each morning.

Bloody northerners
Knowing the weather was meant to be nice and knowing all roads to Cornwall on a Friday in the summer quickly fill up with Caravans and Emmett’s (that’s tourists for us northeners, oh don’t forget to the Cornish we are all Northerners) so we left early. Four of us on our four scoots with Andy on his dodgy P200 leading, we bimbled along enjoying the cracking sunshine down to the A38 and then crossing the Tamar into Kernow leaving Devon and modern civilisation behind.
Looe the town is split in two by the river Looe and so its west Looe and East Looe, with the campsite being just up the road from East Looe and as you cross the bridge you see just how pretty the place is… a cracking town. We arrived about three in the afternoon and the place was already filling up with lots of scooterists already on site, parking up by their caravans or pitching their tents. It was £20 for a weekend pass, which covered everything and let you use the camp’s bus which would run continuously up and down to the town on the Saturday.
I thought the weekend price was pretty reasonable but I heard a few people (who were only coming on the Saturday) moaning about still having to pay the full price. All I know is it’s not cheap organising such an event so I would have happily pulled a sicky to do the full weekend.
Looe with a view…
Sweating like a rapist
We quickly found our caravan, which was great because I was wearing my very safe Kevlar armoured waterproof trousers, all very sensible but in that heat as soon as you stop you started to sweat like a rapist. I had come prepared and within a minute of arriving we all cracked open our first of many beers of the weekend and started to spot many friendly and recognizable faces and scooters parked by adjacent caravans. Lots of friendly hugs and people’s funny stories were swapped and that would set the pace for the weekend.
After a few more drinks and a bite to eat we headed up to the do, which was in the campsite’s main hall and bar called the Castaways where you could order food as well, a bit like Woolly but it felt newer and cleaner. That evening passed with lots of old friends meeting up and the Dj’s filling the floor with many drunken revellers. The band for the Friday night was Hot Pearl Snatch and they did a good job playing a variety of songs and styles that went down well with the dancers and the crowd and it was a great night.

The next day dawned and I went for a bimble and watched the various dealers set up inside the dancehall and outside in the car park, selling all the usual essentials and paraphernalia. Then nearby on the grass was a taped off area for the ‘Show ‘n Shine’. All around the sit,e there were lots of scoots, mostly Vespas and Lambrettas, as well as Gileras, Dragsters Scomadis and now Royally Rolly Poly’s, or whatever you call them but no Modenas yet.
Born again?
There were a few knobs in campers with their immaculate scoots on trailers but not too many. What I did notice though was a lot more moddy xmas tree scooters, there were two in the show and quite a few others about. This seems to be a trend, remember at Tenby recently a moddy PX won Punters Choice by a wide margin. Some people call them ‘Born Agains’ or just ‘Comedy Mods’ many of these guys are completely new to the scene but they are not usually youngsters. Now I’m not sure we all have to start chanting ‘We are The Mods’ or storm the beach but it is a growing trend that may worry some and rally organisers may have to take notice of.

There were a couple of tasty Lambrettas in the show and they were local boys and as I said a few xmas trees and some nice Vespas but I think Perry’s Auto cutdown/creation was outstanding and the total opposite to the xmas trees.

Now everyone in the world knew that there was a Royal Wedding in Windsor that same weekend but at one caravan some scooterists led by Mrs Brady decided to celebrate the wedding by organising their very own street party with pics, flags, bunting and pictures of past royal weddings – including Charles and Di and of course Jason and Kylie. Lots of food and canopies were laid on and Sarah as always surprised and surpassed everyone, and it had to be said, even Andy Weir our very own arch-Republican was seen to chuckle and have some Royal Food as prepared by our Sarah who was our Queen for the day.

After that we took the free bus down to the town and carried on celebrating the weekend in various pubs, it really is a cracking little town, finally ending up with a pub with a large beer garden overlooking the beach. It was a great afternoon and looking around me I wondered how many would make it to the evening do. About sixish, we caught the dodgy double-decker bus which I am sure is the older cousin of the one they use for the same purpose at Woolacombe Rally and we headed back up the twisty road back to the campsite.
Geno, Geno
That evening at the Castaway was an evening of fun with the main act being Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band who I am told, like Megan Markel is in the Royal Family but his is the Royal Family of Soul. Now it turns out this guy is 74 years old but Christ he was belting out the numbers like a youngster on speed. When he was done Emma and co kept the sounds spinning and the floor alive until the wee small hours.
Overall I must thank the clubs and all the guys and gals who organised and ran this event, which was rammed full of very happy scooterists. It may be ‘The Run from the Scum’ and in the past many people have called us all ‘Scum’ but that weekend we were the happiest and friendliest ‘Scum’ on the planet…
Cheers folks see you next time… Oh and a good tip, when they advertise next year’s dates book up fast it will sell out again (and get the Friday off).
