Kymco announced yesterday that it will officially enter India with its “Game-changing” Ionex electric scooter. The Taiwanese firm will be in partnership with Twenty Two motors, an Indian company specialising in connected electric vehicles. Between them, they’re set to revolutionise the Indian two-wheeler market by bringing the new era of electric scooters to the masses.
$65 million investment
Kymco have invested $65 million for a 25% stake in Twenty Two Motors which will be used to set up a new plant to build both scooters and batteries in India for the local market.
Ionex
Kymco launched the Ionex concept earlier this year and then earlier this month launched Ionex Commercial to give all businesses and governments an accessible electric transport solution. The Ionex approach uses charging facilities and battery banks where batteries can be swapped for a charged one, as well as smart batteries and IT systems for a complete EV solution. They plan to use these technological breakthroughs around the world, including India. The first Ionex model, FLOW, will be available in early 2019.
India is the largest two-wheeler market in the world and the Indian government is actively promoting green transport solutions as well as establishing an EV infrastructure. The latest ‘National E-Mobility Programme’ has set out to rid India of one-third of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 with a “Go electric, go green” campaign being used to spread the word and ultimately decrease pollution in the cities.

Commercial or end user?
Whether you’re a consumer, or commercial operation there’s no doubt that an electric vehicle will be part of your not too distant future. Delivery riders will be legislated on to them in the cities, as will commuters, tourists and visitors. Battery banks and interchangeable batteries will become the norm and range anxiety, to a certain extent, for the average user will become much less of an issue.
