Exactly three years ago today, Sticky and myself sat in a web developers office drinking Peroni and pressed the button to launch a new type of scooter media source. We’d been getting tired of ‘working for the man’ in our freelance roles for various magazines and wanted the freedom to create our own online scooter magazine. A FREE source of information, features and news about new products.

Underdogs Revenge – our first ScooterLab video

Six months of hard work had already gone into ScooterLab, or SLUK™ as it was quickly abbreviated to. We’d given up all our other work (and income), spent weeks writing content, trying to decide what readers would want to see, what pages we’d need on the site and how it should be laid out.

The Underdog

We hoped the scootering community would get behind ‘The underdog’ and support our FREE magazine by reading our features, watching our videos and sharing them far and wide. They did and we’re eternally grateful for all the input you’ve all had so far – keep reading and sharing them please.

Use the people who support us

We’re also grateful to all the advertisers who have helped to keep the site FREE to view, remember to click their adverts when you’re looking for scooter parts, services etc. They’re the people who enable us to produce content for the site. You’ll also notice that all of our advertisers are specific to what we do, rather than taking money off any type of business just to swell the SLUK budget. If we’re happy to use their services, we’re happy to have them on the site.

Accidental inventing

We launched our SLUK Shop in the summer of 2016 to sell a few T-shirts, then accidentally diversified into designing and manufacturing scooter parts and accessories, as well as hand picking clothing and equipment we use, wear, recommend or trust.

As it stands we have around 50 SLUK Plastic products, (not available until later this month due to holidays) as well as SLUK Clips, SLUK merchandise and various brands including Scorpion Exhausts, Casa Performance, Scootronics, Tucano Urbano, NISA Seats. We’ve also got a few new brands to add later this month, including a range of workshop tools and scooter parts by PLC Corse and some cool clothing brands that you can’t just buy anywhere.

Evolution

Over the last three years, things have changed and evolved at SLUK. Most notably Sticky left us in November 2017 to go and invent stuff and write books. He’s still a big part of the ScooterLab story though and writes for us as often as he can.

Sticky had realised that the internet is never full, unlike a paper magazine and feeding it is more of a full-time job than he envisaged. It gave him a chance to update his Lambretta manual to invent a few things and write his latest book. We launched pre-sales of his new ‘Scooterboys – The Lost Tribe’ book earlier this week and sold the first 350 signed copies out in just 24-hours.

We’re currently negotiating with the publisher to try and get some extra copies…

The future?

Moving forwards ScooterLab will continue to look to the future of all things scooter related, evolve, innovate and push the boundaries. We’ll continue to bring you the news, reviews and products you need to hear about or strive to own. We’ll also continue to bring it to you for FREE, content written for and by road going scooterists.

Thanks to you all for the first three years and for helping to turn ScooterLab and SLUK into the success it is.
