WHERE: Morecambe
WHEN: 1985
WHO: Steve Jones RIP (riding), Donny (Dean Sheppard) + Mark O’Niell (Kilgores front man)
WHAT: Road surfin’
WHY: ’cause Charlie don’t surf
Thought I remembered the guys surfing the roads at Morecambe – then I saw my scoot on the right! – Yeah I was there, wish I could remember it better!
No digital images back in the day, just some brief snap shots to capture what was a crazy time of new found freedom, this was my first long distance rally – Bristol to Morecambe on my home tuned, cut down bitza Lambretta KYD 56K, spanish chrome ring Li with GP head set, 175cc with a Mickeck. It was full metal flake at first; wasn’t everyone’s? Then I got busy with the tin snips!! My great mate Carfy airbrushed the blue candy fogging and we named it ‘nervous wreck’
The journey was a whirlwind of motorway and the magic of meeting more and more scooters at each service station, Belstaff, Achilles, moccasins and woolly gloves from me mum; I was the new Barry Sheene! I rode there with Dougy and Steff Block (now in the USA) and on arriving at the promenade after a day’s riding, I saw the sea….I was off like a newly released cub into the wild, I was past the Battery before I realised I was on my own!
We stayed at Max and Tina’s; what a weekend, made many friends for life and this picture brings it all back…you’ll no doubt recall the dance of the flaming assholes and the dambusters games outside the Ranch House (and more usually the Dear Leap) and if you’ve seen Colonel Kilgore’s North Vietnamese Formation surf team, then this pic should put a smile on your face too!
I’d do it all again as well…
