It’s not really what you need just after Christmas but 105,000 MCE Insurance Company customers received letters recently to tell them that their scooter, moped, motorcycle insurance policy would be terminated on January 31st.

This also affected anybody insured with MCE Insurance Company for car or van insurance (those policies ended on January 14th). MCE Insurance Company (now known as Green Realisations 123) were one of the biggest names in the motorcycle insurance business but the insurance side of their business went into administration on November 19th 2021. Initially, MCE promised to honour existing cover but has since decided (probably on the advice of the administrators) to cancel all policies that were taken out or renewed before 9th November 2021. Those later policies were underwritten by Sabre Insurance Group rather than MCE and ARE STILL valid.

Can I still ride after the policy ends?

In a word, NO. Once your current MCE policy is cancelled you will need to arrange alternative insurance cover immediately.

Will I get a refund?

Affected customers will receive a 90% pro-rata refund from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) for any unused months left on their policy. Customers will receive a cheque in the post.

What about my no claims bonus?

It’s possible that you won’t receive your no claims bonus for the final year of your policy, although some insurers have promised to help MCE customers when taking out a new policy.

I’ve got a claim going through, what happens?

Don’t panic, the FSCS will still look after and pay your existing claim, they will automatically take your case on and be in touch.

New claim?

If you’re currently insured with MCE and need to make a new claim before the policy becomes void (on January 31st at 11:59PM) you need to contact MCE on 01933 351361 or via their website here.

Lexham offer to help

Specialist scooter insurance company, Lexham have stepped in to help former MCE customers by offering to give a full year’s no claims discount for any customer who had a full nine months or more of claim-free cover before it was cancelled due to the administration.

If you’re getting a Lexham quote online and were an MCE customer with nine months or more of no claims just select ‘Full year’ during an online quote. You may still need to provide proof though.

Insurance loan

Lexham have also secured a loan agreement to help riders who can’t afford to reinsure before they get a refund from MCE. A 10% deposit is all that’s required.

Because your policy was cancelled through no fault of your own you don’t have to declare it as a cancelled policy when you’re getting quotes or taking out a new policy.

Lexham Insurance cover all bikes, scooters, mopeds, delivery and courier machines, fleet and quads.
