Everybody’s dad had one to go to work on in the 1970s, many of us used to scramble one around the fields as teenagers and it’s sold more around the world than any other vehicle. That’s a bold claim for what was once just a run of the mill affordable transport solution.
It never seemed cool back in the day and you certainly didn’t aspire to own one when you grew up but in the last decade, this little Honda workhorse has developed a niche custom market, making this once mundane looking step-thru become cool. In fact, it’s become such an icon that Honda has revitalised it, added some modern tech and released a brand new Super Cub. Looking at the pictures it seems like they’ve made a damn good job of it too.
Learner legal
Unlike its 110cc predecessor, the new Super Cub boasts a learner legal 125cc engine, which makes a lot more sense for most countries where a 125cc learner limit is imposed – could this be the next big thing to tempt 17 year old on to two wheels?
The engine is air-cooled and has a claimed miles per gallon of 188.4. Honda are generally very accurate with their measurements as well. The 3.7-litre fuel tank is tiny by comparison to modern standards but gives a range of 152 miles, far enough for most commuters. The Super Cub retains it’s familiar semi-automatic gear change, it’s a clutchless 4-speed system that’s easy to use and great for novices.
21st century
Bringing things bang up to date are the LED lighting all round, and the use of Honda’s Smart Key system. You just have the key in your pocket to enable it to start. The key also controls the immobiliser and has an ‘answer back’ facility. Push the button and the indicators will flash to help you find your Cub in busy parking areas.
Well finished
A modern LCD dashboard, a well thought out blend of quality finishes and retro styling gives the Cub a modern look without losing the styling of the original. In fact, the Super Cub’s shape is so instantly recognisable that it was the first vehicle to be given 3-dimensional trademark in Japan. With over 100 million Cub’s being sold over the last 60-years there’s no wonder we can all recognise one.
If this machine isn’t a hit around Europe I’ll eat my crash helmet…
