VIDEO | Edited by Andy hylton from footage shot during a Paul Heaton/Jacqui Abbott video shoot
You\’ve all seen the trailers, probably spotted the film crew at events and will no doubt have followed the story on SLUK. \’The Scooterists\’ is one man\’s dream to make a fly on the wall style film about what we all get up to on our classic scooters. It\’s not the usual media stereotypical image of Mods, this is about grassroots Scooterists in all their guises. Getting this film made isn\’t so much a commercial money spinner for the talented filmmaker behind it, Andy Hylton. This is more an itch that needs scratching, one of those festering passions to create something special about our scene.
We brought you an exclusive interview with Andy here. We also helped launch his Kickstarter campaign, where Andy hoped to raise an ambitious £149,600. That\’s the amount needed to shoot and edit the footage (plus make the DVDs/Bluray copies). Sadly with less than a day to go before the end of that campaign, it looks like his project needs a bump start rather than a kickstart. Less than £8,000 has so far been pledged. If every Scooterist who watched his last trailer had pledged just £20 (the amount needed to get you a copy of the film once it\’s finished) the total would have been smashed.
Down but not out
Andy may be disappointed not to have reached the target (no money is taken from Kickstarter supporters unless the total is reached) but he\’s still determined to make this film, no matter how he gets there. Just this morning Putoline have stepped into the frame and agreed to support the project but it\’ll need a few more big players to get this film off the ground.
We\’ll keep you posted as to what the next step is.

It\’s very unlikely the total will be raised, if it\’s not funded then no money is taken but pledging will still give Andy some hope that people are interested in seeing this becoming a reality.

How the Kickstarter funds would be spent…
Andy Hylton gave us his thoughts on the Kickstarter campaign and his future hopes for The Scooterists It’s a bit of a setback not receiving the funds needed to continue filming, but I’ve come this far on my own, I can carry on. I consider the campaign successful in other ways; learning about the story, gaining exposure for the project and building the brand of THE SCOOTERISTS. I have a strong concept, massive support from the industry and many individuals, scooter clubs, workshops and now a leading oil brand Putoline are behind me. Things are surprisingly looking up. The hunger for quality videos on scootering continues. A video I posted last night already has had over 12,000 views in less than 12 hours, so I know people want to see my film and appreciate the work I’m putting out. I can’t force people to pre-order the DVD before it is made, but the purpose of the shorts was to show the type of work I can do without funding. The Kickstarter money would have been helpful in terms of cash flow. This is my full-time job so I need to make sure I can afford to put the time into making it without having to compromise whenever paid work comes along. I hope that people don’t see this as a money-making venture, as once I calculate the hours of work put in I’m making less than minimum wage and actually losing money. It’s not MY story but I’m willing to plough my own money into telling the scooter story. I understand that we all have our hobbies and money pits to support. Scooterists have one of the deepest! The Kickstarter would have guaranteed that I can pay for the shooting, editing and post-production as well as sound mix, mastering and all the printing/manufacturing of rewards. If we don’t reach the goal I still make the film but without the pressure of time limitations. This gives me space to do this slowly. I really don’t see this as a failure but more of a learning curve. As some doors close then others open. Just look at a list of films that studios wouldn’t back, such as Back To The Future, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, E.T. etc. I know they are in a different league but you get my point. In the film industry, it is widely agreed that nobody knows anything. With the amount of online channels needing content this could be something that would interest broadcasters. I want the film to represent the true voice of the scooterists, which is a hard thing to define but I am meeting many new supporters on a daily basis and winning the trust of the scooterists is one of my biggest assets. Madspeed Performance Kind individual offers of support are coming in. Dave Madison and the Madspeed Performance Team has given me a generous financial contribution, which will be something to keep us going. I’m humbled by the generosity of strangers. The customers and scooterists at a recent meeting at the Duke William in Shelf, West Yorkshire had a whip round and gave me £90 which covered ferry costs for myself and a cameraman over to the Isle Of Wight. I run a tight ship and I’m able to maximise my budget and still create fantastic production values. I don’t mind working for free but I can’t expect the crew to do it. I’m very lucky to have a loyal and talented crew who believe in this film as much as I do. Richard Madeley of V. I. RENTAL – a Bristol/ Cardiff/ London based camera rental house, has offered me generous support with camera gear, lenses etc. This is a huge deal, and will mean the quality of the images will continue even if the quality of the sandwiches doesn’t! One of the most life-changing moments for me comes with deciding to become a Scooterist and Marcus ‘Spirit Of 1984’ Broix has kindly offered his help in finding my first scooter. This summer will hopefully see me pass my bike test and become one of you. Wangerland here we come! Rest assured I am still filming, meeting people at rallies and multi-meets and I am completely committed to putting this film onto the screen. See you all soon and keep those suits and boots clean for the premiere. The journey continues…”
