Sad news is filtering through about ‘sick company’ LML (Lohia Machinery LTD) of Kanpur facing bankruptcy.
LML were former Piaggio partners in India, producing the PX and PK under licence before going fully independent and forging ahead with their own models based on Vespa styling but with their own technology. More recently the Star range included both 2-stroke and 4-stroke look-a-likes of the PX including variomatic versions. Indeed we tested the smallframe Star Lite at the beginning of SLUK’s existence.
LML have been registering losses for several years now. When large export markets like Egypt banned the sale of 2-strokes, LML were not particularly fast to produce replacement models. The same applies now with Euro4 in Europe, preventing the sale of any of their current scooter products without expensive investment in upgrades.
Last June we reported that LML had closed their factory for ‘restructuring’ with a view to producing 3-wheelers for the domestic Indian market and at that point the writing was on the wall.
Sad day
For SLUK this is a sad day because LML were one of the last companies mass-producing manual gear-shift scooters, however both Scomadi and Lambretta (Innocenti SA) are proposing geared models for the future.
For current UK importers MotoGB this puts a big hole in their retro scooter range, no doubt explaining their interest in setting up Royal Alloy and taking an interest in new Lambretta.
As for owners of LML scooters. The good news is that much of the 2-stroke production shared parts with Vespa so it should be easy to keep these machines on the road using pattern parts. For owners of the newer 4-stroke and automatic models the news is much bleaker with shortages of some spare parts already afflicting the brand.

Update
Matt Tipper – who provided our recent GPR exhaust review for the LML 4-stroke – just provided this additional information:
Not insolvent yet, they have until November to propose a way of paying back all their debts. 75% of the creditors have to agree to it,if they dont then LML will be liquidated.
From Tasso who know more about LML than most –
‘LML has been classed a ‘Sick company’ since 2007. This notice is just a formality it has to publicly display like we do here in newspapers. LML just launched it’s Buddy 3wheeler, it received funding only last week for retailing in India. The 4stroke auto and geared will also be sold in India and they are about to start production of it. If I’ve learnt anything with LML it’s a roller coaster. As for export, that’s down to importers in each country, prob is it’s all been fragmented since LML ITALIA lost whole Euro rights. So each individual importers commitment is smaller and they need to mass a large order to make a Euro 4 model. It really needs one company again to throw big numbers at the factory. The problem is LML is not a easy company to deal with, if they don’t see sales quick they jump ship pretty quickly.’
Unfortunately, I’m one of the 125 4 stroke Auto owners and when my 3-year-old low mileage (3,000Miles) scooter decided two weeks ago to eject the conrod through the front casing that was the end of me and my short-lived relationship with LML. As it’s been rumoured for the last year I already knew it was the end of the road for LML 4 strokes especially the Auto.
I had little to no chance of parts so I had to bite the bullet and break my scooter for parts one moment its a nice looking scooter worth upwards of £1,600 then its just a pile of parts for sale.
So Scomadi Auto here I come just hope I can get hold of some platforms though as its taller in the saddle and im a short arse. As always Ride Safe everyone. Paddy Northern Templars sc
Explain this to me. Not only is there a LML auto engine on Ebay now you could have bought but:
* the LML auto is merely a GY6 in a special case (for the most part). So parts should have been easily found.
* did you call each and every LML dealer in the UK?
* did you call Tasso?
* did you call AJ Sutton spares?
* did you post on the LML forums looking for parts?
I think you panicked and really wanted a Scomadi so you took the easy way out mate. Sorry to be blunt.
Yes LML will wheel on the roads very in 2W EV space.
I hope that a deal can be done to save LML from closure…not my cup of tea but it’s the wheels on the road that matters

there should be a class action to sue moto gb. unless they buy back scooters still under warranty. if moto gb are not insured against such a situation, they should then sue lml. presuming they were smart enough to have a guarantee of parts supply in their contract.
I guess you can also sue Piaggio for no longer making the PX either then.
piaggio bust? or just closed factory for a year with no real reason. oh and I said sue moto gb, as they are providing the warrany. sorry to be blunt
piaggio not making parts available?
Give it a year and you won’t find many PX parts from Piaggio either
LML did not get enough members of the Committee of Creditors (COC) held on 29th June 2017.
The Corporate Debtor had sought approval of the COC to raise interim finance up to Rx 10 Crores. The e-voting results relating to raising of interim finance
1 40.66% comprising of State Bank of India, IFCI ltd and Reliable motors approved the resolution
2 51.09% comprising Stressed Assets Stabilisation Fund (IDBI), Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, ICICI, Edelweiss ARC and Phoenix ARC rejected the resolution, and
3 8.25% comprising of Corporation Bank abstained from voting on the resolution.
In view of the above since resolution was not approved by a minimum of 75% (by value) by members of COC. In the circumstance stated above the Corporate Debtor cannot provide work and having no alternative has to “Lay Off” the concerned workmen till further notice.
I own a lml star 125 4t auto…those of us that own one will know it has no guts….even on the slightest of inclines….looking for engine upgrade parts….cant find anything for the automatic in parts….can anyone point me in the right direction…failing that….it will be the case of permanently taking it off the road….

Hi Carl – I just posted a similar question to yours. Did you manage to get a Certificate of Conformity? and/or did you manage to register it in the UK?
I would try speaking to MotoGB who were the UK importer at the time.
Is LML factory operating now?
No, probably gone forever.
Hi Not sure if anyone can help. I have a Star LML 200 CC. I purchased this in France and now trying to register it in the UK. I have NOVA confirmation, and a new UK MOT. To complete the registration it seems as though I need a “Certificate of Conformity” – which is issued by the Manufacturer. As the Manufacturer is now ceased trading I am stuck! Can anyone advise?
Probably your best bet is to speak to MotoGB, they were the previous importer and may be able to help.
