At last, we’ve got a benefit from Brexit! A controversial EU law that had the potential to decimate UK motorsports has been scrapped as it passed through parliament earlier today (Monday 25th April).
If it had been allowed to go through, the bill would have added an extra £50 a year to ordinary motorists’ insurance policies and would have made grassroots motorsports impossible to insure. Vnuk would have covered motorsports collisions, meaning they’d have been treated as regular road traffic incidents and competitors would have to be insured to cover it.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:
“Sacking this nonsensical EU rule will protect the pockets of hard-working British people as we continue to help ease cost of living pressures.
“This is another Brexit win and I’m delighted this Bill has rightfully passed through Parliament, saving billions of pounds of additional insurance costs and protecting our world-leading motorsports sector.”
What is Vnuk?
The 2014 European Court of Justice ruling came after a test case involving a Slovenian farmer, Mr Vnuk who was knocked off his ladder on private land by a reversing farm vehicle. The ruling directed that compulsory motor insurance must be extended to ALL vehicles used on private land. It meant everything from a ride-on mower, to a golf buggy would need to be insured. That included any form of motorised sport, including scooter racing.
Vnuk would have cost an estimated £2 billion to implement, that cost would have been passed on to the motorist.
