Oxford XA5 features a 5.5mm hardened locking pin Oxford XA5 features a 5.5mm hardened locking pin

Scooter security is a hot topic at the moment. Oxford have a new alarmed disc-lock that is purpose-made for scooters.

UPDATE – click this link for our full review of the XA5.

The challenge

The problem with disc locks for scooters is the limited space available between the wheel and disc, particularly on scooters like the Vespa PX with 10” wheels and a recessed disc. This XA5 is supposed to fit the PX and should also fit many of the Lambretta disc brake conversions.

As a result of this, specific scooter disc locks tend to be smaller, with thinner locking pins and possibly not as secure as beefier, more expensive motorcycle versions. Where space is restricted though, you have little choice.

The fact is that any security is better than no security, and the vast majority of stolen scooters had no additional lock fitted.

It’s alarming

The XA5 features a 110dB siren.

Disc lock alarms are a brilliant compromise if you remain in earshot of your scooters when they are parked. The issue with these alarms is that they run on batteries and batteries die and can be a pain to replace. Oxford have thought of that though, and the XA5 is rechargeable via USB. Clever.

Reminder included

Riding away with a disc lock still fitted is one of the greatest ways to ruin paintwork and any perceived cool that you had. The XA5 features a handy cord to hook over your grip to remind you to take it off before riding.

Where and how much?

The XA5 is available from Oxford Products dealers for a very reasonable £44.95. We plan to test some on SLUK soon. Watch this space.
