SIP have just released the long-awaited version 3.0 of their highly effective Vespa box exhaust. The Road 2.0 took some beating – especially within the confines of the original box exhaust dimensions but they’ve done it. SIP claim the SIP Road 3.0 increases power by up to 25% when compared to the Road 2.0. That’s a big difference – a racing exhaust in a box.
Designers brief
The brief for the designers was as follows: It should still work on any type of engine. It should operate at low and real-world usable rpm, it should beat the best in that range, and it should still keep the original dimensions of the box. The new SIP Road 3.0 should remain subtle and compact. The last point, in particular, turned out to be a real challenge. Others use larger boxes to find performance, which, of course, makes life much easier. Unfortunately squaring the circle takes time, so development took a little while.
The result is worth the wait though. A small box that works well with a vast variety of engine setups while keeping up with the very best in terms of performance.

Designed around popular kits
SIP used the popular Malossi Sport and Polini kits as reference points during the development of the exhaust but Quattrini or Pinasco kits work extremely well too. It’s an exhaust that works very well with an SI carb, so you don’t need an all singing and dancing engine to make the best of the 3.0 performance gains.
Manufacturing is a bit more demanding, it’s a cold drawn design with an upper and lower half to help minimise tolerances between individual pipes. It also means there are less welded seams running perpendicular to the gas flow direction. Building the exhaust in this way also means the larger downpipe can be routed in tighter curves to stop it coming in to contact with other parts, like the centre stand.
2 bhp increase
It produces significantly more torque and massively higher power. With a Malossi Sport on a P-Range the difference in power over the SIP Road 2.0 may be anything up to 2 bhp. This promises a relaxed ride with no problems when shifting up at all. The sound of the SIP ROAD is nicely understated without drawing unwanted attention, that makes it ideal for cities and for the daily ride.
Please do not forget to adjust the jetting and the ignition.

Conclusion
On paper (or screen in this case) it looks like the SIP Road 3.0 will be a great update on an already very competent exhaust. With up to a 2 bhp power increase and more torque, precision manufacturing and already painted with heat resistant paint it’ll no doubt be the box exhaust to beat. We’ve not tried one yet but we will be running a competition in the new year for you to win one.

anyone tell me what size main jet would be needed on a standard p2 carb and woud it need a hole in the airbox filter?
