There’s a lot of nonsense written about original Mods and Rockers. Even from this rather good, if sadly silent, footage it’s quite apparent that the press encouraged fake conflict to help them sell newspapers and pad out a non-story into WW3. How times haven’t changed!
What this Huntley Archive video does reveal is the reality of the dress sense and transport of the original Mods. That element of it is undoubtedly genuine.
While only a minority of scooter riders today would call themselves Mods there is still little doubt that the youth cult of the ’60s and ‘that film’ inspired many of us to twist our first throttle.
I believe there’s a party at Kitchener Road…
