Pinlock Overlay – sun-reactive anti-glare over-visor

 

This is one of the eternal problems of motorcycle and scooter riding; closely following how to stop rain entering waterproof gloves at the cuff. Someone will fix that one day as well…

 

In the UK we nominally aren’t allowed tinted visors, but even when you do wear one you still have to carry another clear one for when it gets dark or rains.

 

Dutch innovators Pinlock are well on my radar because they produce indisputably the best anti-mist visor insert. They are so good that they are fitted to many high-end helmets like my Shoei as standard.

 

Pinlock have now produced an outer over-visor which is reactive to light allowing you to escape glare when it’s sunny but also to see clearly when it’s dark.

 

How well this will work when the surface gets scratched or dirty is going to be interesting, but I bet they’ve done their homework.

How does it work?

According to Pinlock;  “Overlay doesn’t use a vulnerable coating on the outside, but a UV-sensitive photochromatic film sandwiched between two premium quality polycarbonate layers. These layers are treated
with a special anti-scratch coating without any UV-blockers. The Overlay is mounted on the specially developed Pinlock® Tear-Off Pins (included), that accommodate both the Overlay on the outside and the Pinlock® anti-fog insert lens on the inside of the visor. This concept offers the best of both worlds: perfect anti-fog and anti-glare properties.”

 

What are the hang-ups?

 

  • Firstly, it isn’t cheap at €99.95 RRP
  • Secondly, at the moment it only fits 2D visors (with a single curvature) 

 

Pros:

 

  • There’s a chance that this will be a legal anti-glare solution for the UK. 
  • Pinlock make the best of their money selling OEM to helmet manufacturers. If they can get this technology sorted for 3D visors then you may not need to buy an Overlay, it might come ready-fitted to your helmet.

HOW IS THE OVERLAY MOUNTED?
The Overlay is mounted on the outside of the original visor on Pinlock® Tear-Off Pins, on which both the Overlay and the Pinlock® insert lens may be mounted.

 

HOW DOES THE OVERLAY FUNCTION?
A special photochromatic film that reacts to UV-light is sandwiched between two polycarbonate layers. This makes the Overlay much less vulnerable and resistant to cleaning. This technology is patented by Pinlock®.

 

WHAT IS A 2D VISOR?
A 2D visor is bent in 2 dimensions, from left to right. The line from the top to the bottom runs straight.

 

DOES IT FIT MY HELMET?
Please refer to the model list to inspect of the Overlay is suited for a particular helmet brand and model. More versions are to be introduced soon, just as 3D models.

 

HOW FAST DOES THE OVERLAY REACT?
The color of the visor changes under the influence of UV-light from clear to dark in a matter of seconds. Back to clear takes a little while longer, but this offers your eyes the time to adapt to the color change.

 

CAN WE EXPECT MORE FROM PINLOCK®?
We never stop developing new products at Pinlock. For the Overlay we shortly want to offer a 3D version and we’re working on an Overlay with different color characteristics. The Pinlock® Overlay presently fits the following brands and models:
