Readspeed are taking orders for this little yellow box of electrickery. It’s their new Hermes 4-stage adjustable CDI designed to work with all 2-pin IDM-based type ignitions (Varitronic, Vespatronic, Casatronic, Parmakit, Malossi, Polini etc etc)
Hermes is designed to protect your engine when set-up correctly, and as such it’s been named after a Greek god; protector of travellers. This plug and play item will work with any Lambretta/Vespa or automatic fitted with an aftermarket 2-pin variable ignition system based on the 4-pole IDM stator plate.
The CDI itself is simple to fit, just unplug and remove your original CDI and replace it with the Readspeed item. However your ignition will need setting up using a strobe.
The 4-stage unit offers an easy, fuss-free way to allow you to alter your advance/retard ignition setting quickly and easily by simply turning the switch to the desired setting. It can be altered depending on your engine’s characteristics, or even the quality of fuel you’re using. If it’s pinking for instance, just alter it to a safer setting.
The four positions:
Map 0 = static straight line
Map 1 = straight line 2 degrees retarded
Map 2 = advanced before 5000rpm (by up to 5 degrees)
Map 3 = advanced before 5000rpm (by up to 7 degrees)
The benefits of Hermes include:
- simple set-up
- better idling with certain ignitions
- more mid-range power
- the ability to reduce detonation at the flick of a switch.
To set the Hermes up, set the CDI to ‘Map 0’ and adjust your stator position for your preferred static timing figure (e.g. 17 degrees static).
Maps 2 and 3 then give you two options to advance the timing to boost power before 5,000 rpm, but then to retard to a safe static timing once the engine starts to make good power.
Map 1 gives you a super-safe retarded map for use if you encounter poor quality fuel.

Point of note: it is best to use basic, non-adjustable strobe guns when timing these ignition systems. With the ‘wasted spark’ system, the ignition fires twice per rotation of the crankshaft and this can fool more advanced strobe guns into doubling the timing reading (so for instance 17º will read as 34º). This gun supplied by Cambridge Lambretta has been tested to work on IDM-based ignition systems.
