This year sees the introduction of a brand new one-make race series in the BSSO Championship, it’s the Scomadi Cup 200 Challenge. An affordable controlled package that is already seeing new riders signing up and a few old hands either returning to racing or swapping from the classic classes.
It promises close, competitive racing on a level playing field (well twisty tracks around the UK to be precise) with all machines being prepared by Dave Wilson of RetroTech Racing. With sealed engines and not much scope to tune the rule book it should show rider talent without the need for deep pockets and a big budget. We popped down to Leamington Spa to speak to Dave about RetroTech and the race series…
Stage 3 kit and graphics
Dave had just finished prepping the first of the Scomadi Cup scooters, which includes fitting a Stage 3 PM Tuning kit – race spec exhaust (slightly steeper angle than the road exhaust for improved ground clearance), TFI module and variator kit. The modified scooter was then being taken to PM Tuning for final set up and Dyno, once set up this first machine will be used as the ‘control’ scooter to allow Dave to set the others up to the same spec before the engines are lock-wired to prevent tampering.
Part of the heavily-subsidised race package includes an hours Dyno time at PM Tuning. It also includes a set of spare panels, headset, plastics, levers, wheels, wet and dry tyres and the logbook so you can keep the scooter if you complete 3/4 of the championship rounds this season.
Dave’s son, Tom designs and applies the race graphics in-house at RetroTech, meaning most things can be done from the unit located a few miles outside Leamington.
Brakes and kill switch
The race series will be using the latest ABS 200cc Scomadis, 20 of the machines have been made available for the championship. Part of the race prep also includes the fitment of a lanyard kill switch to prevent a crashed machine being able to ride itself after a spill, once the rider and machine part company the engine dies.
Lambretta Innovations
Dave’s background is in fabrication and aside from his usual bespoke builds and projects he has also taken over the Lambretta Innovations name and work from Frank Sanderson. All the jigs and equipment needed to build bespoke Series 5 Lambrettas, wider forks, frames etc. is all now housed at RetroTech.
One of his current projects was commisioned by Frank Sanderson, a proper bit of reverse engineering, fitting a Targa twin 275cc Lambretta engine into a modern Scomadi. Some people may ask ‘Why?’ others may answer ‘Why not?.’ Either way it means the Scomadi frame has been customised to fit any Lambretta engine so if somebody wants a quick and cheaper conversion, rather than doing a Lambretta auto they can have one off the shelf to either do themselves or get RetroTech to complete for you. A ready painted, brand new scooter, albeit with a choice of retro engine configurations, Lambretta, Targa, Casa, GT etc.
New Scomadi dealer
With the race series, RetroTech’s usual work and Lambretta Innovations it means they’ve outgrown their current unit and will be doubling in size in February when they take on the adjoining building. The new building will be used as a shop and showroom, where Dave will be supplying all his parts, as well as becoming a Scomadi dealer. The current unit will be used as a dedicated workshop.
