Thinking outside of the box, ingenuity, or thinking at the end of a clutch cable. Showing our truly global reach (great thing t’internet)! Ginch from Australia let’s us into his little secret regarding Vespa Large frame clutch cables and what a pain in the arse they can be to set up sometimes too!

It’s not very often we get a tip at editorial which complements another, but this one would work quite well with our noggin Scooterist tip #2 published a little while back, so two time and hassle savers for the price of one and it’s all down to you our dear SLUKer!

If you have a great idea that saves, blood, sweat tears or maybe just time, be it at the roadside, or in the shed, take a few photos and send them in with some details. If we feature your tip you’ll be rewarded handsomely with one of our equally handsome SLUK T-shirts.

Bend me, shape me, crimp me

This is something I’ve done for a few years now. I used to find it difficult to get the clutch cable trunnion close to the clutch arm on my Vespa, then get spanners in to do it up tight. Also, the trunnions can sometimes crimp the wire – and if it’s right next to the lever it can place bending stress on the cable at the crimp.

Broken strands

My solution? I add a short length of outer cable between the lever and trunnion. Firstly it puts the trunnion into a position that’s more convenient to get at. Secondly it makes sure there’s no crimping next to the lever. If it does crimp and a strand breaks, I can trim the cable and the outer instead of throwing the cable away. I also use another short length of outer between the trunnion and the third-hand tool when I fit a cable so the tool doesn’t get in the way.

Hot right hander

This can also be useful when you have a right-hand exhaust fitted, although you may want to remove the plastic cover from the extra portion of outer cable as it tends to rest on the pipe and melt.

Cheers for the tip and photo Ginch, a T-Shirt is on its way.
