Think back a few years and everybody sat flicking through magazines to find out what was on and what had been happening. You’d also read a ‘real’ book; play vinyl records (or CD’s) and would use a phone box if you needed to speak to somebody when you were out. You’d take a few grainy photos on a Kodak camera at a rally and sometimes get around to having them developed at Boots, or by sending them off to Truprint in a free envelope.
Technology changed all that though, the digital age quickly obliterated physical ownership. Ask a teenager to show you a collection of magazines, music, photos or films. As sad as it is, most of them can’t because they own and collect them digitally. Our everyday music collection is portable, stored on a two-inch long MP3 player, rather than half a tonne of records. Our favourite books are downloaded to a Kindle and our photographic memories are portable and displayed in high-definition on our laptops and Smart Phones, accessible whenever we need to show them or share with friends. As much as we all love the nostalgia, especially as scooterists who are born enthusiasts and collectors, there are plenty of good things that have come about over the last 20 years.
We like to think of ScooterLab as one of them, it’s the dawning of a new era. ScooterLab is a digital step forward in scooter media. In fact, in many ways it will be a leader in the two-wheeled world. I’m sure that others will quickly copy what we do. You’ll be able to point out that scooterists from SLUK did that first.
ScooterLab is a way for scooterists from around the world, whether they’re into classic scooters or modern, to be able to keep a finger on the pulse. If it’s worth knowing about, our readers will be able to find it on here.
We’ve not reinvented the 10” wheel, but we like to think ScooterLab will evolve as technology develops. We’ve tried to add some three-dimensional aspects and humour to the online magazine; video is one of those elements. It allows us to show road tests and features in a different way. It also means our custom features and technical articles can be brought to life, they’ll have a heartbeat and hopefully inspire you all. If your scooter or project meets the grade it’ll enable you to show off your pride and joy to the whole world, now and in the future.
Launching ScooterLab isn’t something we’ve done lightly; it’s a big project and our new full time job. We know it’s going to shake things up and we’re likely to hit a few bumps along the way, but with your help we’ll shape this website into something the whole scene can be involved with and be proud of. Remember this online mag isn’t brought to you by a big company with deep pockets. ScooterLab is owned, funded, designed and written by road-going scooter riders just like you. We haven’t got a bottomless pit to fund it so we need your help to make it grow. You can help by bookmarking the page, or add it to the home screen of your phone. Use it frequently, just as you would your social network accounts. Share the videos, tag us, share our features, wear our t-shirts and stickers with pride. Send in your stories, photos, videos and let us know of any news or new products.
ScooterLab is 100% free for you to view so there are some adverts on the site (they pay the bills). We like to think we’ve made them aesthetically pleasing and chosen carefully who we allow to advertise. We’re an ethical magazine so you won’t find seedy sex lines or companies who we wouldn’t buy from ourselves. These advertisers have had the faith in us to launch something to benefit us all. Click their links, visit their shops and let them know that you support the people who support us. With your help ScooterLab will grow and spread like wildfire along the scooter grapevine. This is our life, our hobby and our livelihood. Let’s kick some ass fellow SLUKers.

Owning a vintage shopping bike or even an automatic scooter doesn’t mean you have to live your life in black and white.
This is the way of progression, this is the invention of the colour TV for Scootering enthousiasts around the globe.
May you succeed well, we needed this. Wilbert
Thanks Wilbert, as you say – progression isn’t always a bad thing…hopefully you’ll enjoy what else we have in store for you 🙂
