On Saturday the 12th of September the British Scooter Endurance Club return to Teesside for the 6-hour scooter endurance race. One Scottish legend of scootering will be amongst the competitors. Yes, that’s right, Norrie Kerr will be swinging a leg over a small frame Vespa once again.
Number 15
We caught up with Norrie and Dave Delaney at VE (UK) a few days ago as Team Vespa put the final touches to their Quattrini powered number 2 machine. Norrie will be 74 years old on September the 15th, that’s just three days after he’ll have competed in what is quite a physical activity. Whilst most pensionable aged gentleman are tending to allotments and taking up gentle hobbies, Norrie still has that competitive streak and will be piloting the #15 yellow Vespa as part of a three-man team. The other two riders are Dave Steele and Chris Lawrenson.
There’s no stopping him!
Norrie recently did some shakedown testing up at Teesside and was less than happy with his own performance and the set up of the scooter. The gears were all over the place and it had literally no front brake, despite using all new components. He’s since rebuilt the front end again so will hopefully be able to stop it once the flag drops on September 12th. He’s also spent some time setting the gears and cables to try and avoid the false neutrals and wrongly selected gears he suffered on the test day.
Norrie talks us through his comeback and why he’s decided to race again 19 years since his last ever BSSO race at Darley Moor in 2001. He also tells us a few tales and all about his aches and pains in the video above.

The second Team Vespa riders are Dave Delaney, Damian Tunnicliffe and Mark Hodgetts. Dave is the lucky custodian of Norrie’s old KR 1 Vespa 90SS (pictured at Teeside at the top of the page). It’s been raced a couple of times (as a second bike) by Dave in BSSO and will be out in anger for the endurance event. It’s not often you get a chance to see this historic race scooter in action, it still bears battle scars from Norrie’s racing days.
Dave talks us through his involvement on the video above and threatens to be passing Team SLUK on the track next week…

They’ve not only pulled it off but have also negotiated to allow spectators to attend. If you were there last year you’ll know just how good the day was. If you want to go and watch classic scooters competing against each other for 6 hours non-stop then Teesside is a great free day out for you. It’s not a massive place but as long as everybody is sensible the day should go to plan and you’ll have a fantastic day of race action.
Live race timing
With endurance racing it’s not always the outright fastest team who will win. It’s a six-hour strategic game that can be won or lost in the pits, during a messy fuel stop, a bodged rider changeover, a minor crash – or of course thanks to a mechanical issue.

Hats off to Norrie Kerr for signing up and doing it. We are absolutely heartbroken that we can’t do it again this year. None of us can afford the 2 weeks isolation which is mandatory for anyone here who travels abroad. Best of luck to Norrie and all who’ve signed up to do it. Well done Keith for keeping the show on the road. We’ll be back next year.
