Approx 70 or so motorcycles of all shapes, sizes and ages were entered into the Oliver’s Mount Race Circuit Hillclimb on Sunday 8th October. Vintage bikes, classic bikes, modern sports bikes and a few supermoto/motocross bikes thrown in for good measure make for a good spectacle!
But those of us with good taste really turned up to cheer on the four Lambretta riders competing. They were all flying the flag and helping to promote the ‘Scooters on the Mount’ side of the hillclimb events.
The competitors race up part of Scarborough’s legendary Oliver’s Mount road race circuit. It is an anticlockwise track, which is very rare in racing. The bit the hillclimb sprint uses, starts in the area normally used for the pits and finishes at the top of the main hill – the highest point on the track.
The riders go up one at a time with a 30 second or so delay, which makes for constant flowing action. The bikes go in category order – classic, then modern and in different capacity limits too.
Road Safety Nazis look away now.
OK, so you haven’t looked away. Here’s something to get hot under the collar and demand urgent action about. It’s someone having fun on a scooter that they own and bought with their own money. Outrageous.
If you are going to make a comment about irresponsible riding then please direct it at the chavs who are stealing scooters, throwing acid in people’s faces and riding on the pavement to steal phones. There’s something to get justifiably irate about.
But a good wheelie? Nah, just wish that you had the talent.

Mint. Reminds me of a very young Ryan Saxelby. I got him a job at the printing company I worked for and in his first week he wheelied out of the car park on his tuned up small frame, all the way down the hill, passing the MD as he drove up the hill. Is that a mate of yours he asked. Errrrrrr.
Honest officer, I just cleaned my scooter and did’nt want to get my front wheel wet!
