VIDEO: Shaun entertains fellow scooterists

Strictly Scooters, VFM’s wandering annual one-night show of scooter-only mayhem returned to Derbyshire’s Peak District and the Bull i’th Thorn pub which was previously host to Run To The Hills.

We met up with a few of the Kent lot at Donnington Services. Tommy and Gin had suffered a rear-wheel blow-out on his LI, sending them both tarmac surfing and a little sore, but they carried on. I dropped off another pair of armoured waterproofs after Gin’s melted in the slide (but saved her from serious injury) and a new hub stud for Tommy. He’d been wearing body armour under his jacket – which was totally trashed – and was still able to enjoy a night’s partying despite the bruises. If ever there was an advert for wearing decent kit, they would star in it.

Strictly was previously a bit of a subversive event for those in the know – usually 200-300 at a (largely) scooter-only event. We’ve been saying for years that there is a growing demand for scooter-only rallies as an alternative, but not replacement, to the seaside spectaculars. Over 500 people on scooters for the biggest Strictly so far supports that proposition, but it should be pointed out that this coincided with a spectacularly pleasant day for a ride to the dales.

Truth be told, VFM were completely taken aback by the numbers, and the pub itself struggled to cope with food or alcohol orders. By the end of the night most of the optics were empty, as were the stomachs of many scooterists. Here in the hills there are no kebab shops to visit on the way home. Only your brain can hear your belly scream.

For many this is merely a pleasant excuse for a social, apart from the two 50th parties going on around the site for PJ of Jolly Boys and VFM DJ Wigan Tim. Mood on the campground was excellent. We managed to bump into Shaun (Magicman Shaun on FB) who rode down from Warrington on his Lambretta, who just happens to be a spectacularly accomplished magician. The excellent mood carried over to a highly-charged evening in the rammed bar of the pub. Scooterist family – partying hard after a long day drinking in the sun. You know it’s going to be messy…

Why then, at 5am did people start to get on their scooters and go home? A torrent of two-stroke expansions passing by your head on the other side of a thin layer of canvas.

Family – you can’t live with their noisy scooters in the morning and you can’t live without them.
