After Boris Johnson’s ‘social distancing’ speech earlier this week and the news tonight that all pubs and clubs are to close, it’s no surprise to hear that the first National Rally in Whitby has fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic.
Lots of events, like Teignmouth, Phoenix Nights, Bangers & Mash and Ginger’s annual Easter Egg run have already been cancelled or postponed, many others are hanging in the balance.
That means for the first time since the Nationals began in the early 1980s there is no Easter rally. We’re living in very uncertain times and restrictions are likely to get tougher before they’re relaxed. SLUK will keep you up to date with further large scale cancellations as things progress.

What about my B&B?
As it stands at the time of publishing there’s nothing to say you can’t actually visit the town over the Easter weekend and stay at the accommodation you’ve probably already paid for. Bear in mind though that any government guidelines are being put in place to protect ourselves, our loved ones and the general public. By going to Whitby (or any other rally town cancelled due to coronavirus) you’re putting yourself and others at increased risk. The pubs may well still be closed at Easter.

Booking.com?
If you’ve booked using Booking.com (or a similar website) then you may be able to cancel without charge (depending on your individual booking conditions). Having said that, Booking.com don’t include domestic cancellations as part of their ‘Force Majeure’ (Forced Circumstances) but keep your eye on the link for updated advice. It’s highly likely that more and more hotels will close before Easter to avoid the potential of infection anyway. So it’s worth hanging on to your booking if it’s already paid for, in the hope you may receive a ‘get out of jail free card’ and your money back.
Out of pocket?
If you’re left out of pocket and have an annual travel insurance policy, or travel policy through your bank account you may be able to claim the money back (check your small print). You may also be able to claim the money back if you paid by credit card.
Remember though that the tourism industry has already been badly affected by this pandemic, as have the Scooterists who put on the rallies (it costs thousands of pounds in advance costs to put on a National Rally). They will be hit hard financially. These people may well need your revenue to survive in the coming months.
