We’ll ride again – thank you from ScooterLab | EDITORIAL

 

The last two months have been a little unusual for us all, to say the least. We’ve gone from a life of normality, with the freedom to ride our humble scooters and travel anywhere in the world. The option to plan events we want to ride to, holidays, Euro and world scooter events, ride-outs and just our usual summer fun – it’s all been taken away for the time being. 

 

Many of you are now taking an enforced ‘holiday’ from work, or business with an uncertain, or at least different future to look forward to. Many industries have already suffered irreparable damage, many others will have to change their complete strategy, rearrange the way their workers work. Potentially thousands of you won’t ever go back to work in the same way as you did in the past. Maybe that will be a good thing though for many? Change isn’t always bad.

 

Social distancing is hard to achieve in many ‘hands-on’ professions, hairdressing, tattooists, driving instructors (my very hard working missus is one of those) for instance. Homeworking will become the norm for many admin staff as companies realise they don’t need all that extra office space and employees can actually be trusted to work from home.

Of course, there’s also the very real human sacrifice and suffering that’s been the reason everything else has had to change during the coronavirus outbreak. We’ll forever be in debt to our healthcare workers, shop workers, postman and women, police, army, fire and ambulance services, the people making medical equipment, PPE, the volunteers and all those key industries we’ve become reliant on.

Raising funds

 

SLUK readers recently helped raise £1,152 for the NHS thanks to the sale of the limited edition Si Barber/Crusader patch printed above (now all sold out). Many others are still busy raising cash for good causes, helping by volunteering or home printing/making much-needed PPE.

 

If you’re friends with Stockport Crusader, Jonah you’ll know he’s started the first of seven days taking his daily walk in different fancy dress costumes and raising funds for the NHS. Jonah is renowned for his dressing up antics so expect good things if you’re friends with him on Facebook. Even if not, you can donate using the link.

Things have changed for us at ScooterLab of course, we can’t go out and ride to rallies (there are currently no rallies to ride to anyway), or test new parts, riding kit or equipment. We’ve also had the press launches of a couple of new scooters cancelled/postponed. Some advertisers have had to pull, or postpone their ads. The Pinasco 251 engine we planned to build ready for the rally season didn’t materialise before Italy closed down and our trip to Vespa World Days in Bali has already fallen victim to the virus. Things could be so much worse though so we can’t complain.

We’ve managed to keep finding news, features and information to give our readers a regular dose of scooter info, the odd bit of fun and something to read in-between endless days of DIY and exercise. SLUK readers have put pen to paper (well keyboard to screen really) and sent in their tips, stories and ideas. We’re very grateful for your help during a time when there’s much less happening for us to write about out there in scooter land. Keep sending stuff in to editorial@ScooterLab.UK it all helps people to fill their time. We’ve also got our craft competition running, have a look here if you missed it last week.

Our own manufacturing and development for SLUK Plastics™ has changed and adapted during the lockdown but Nigel and wife Julie have managed to keep things going for us. Supplying our SLUK customers and our main trade partner, SIP (you can buy our plastics direct from them as well you know) with screens/SLUK Guards and various other scooter accessories.

 

We’d like to thank the postal service, couriers and freight drivers for helping to keep our mail order service running during these troubled times. Without them we’d be truly stuffed.

Stronger than before

 

Despite the world being a different place, things will get better, eventually. We’ll be able to plan things and ride scooters again. Life will go back to some kind of normality and the scars will slowly heal. People will adapt.

 

In the future, we’ll look back and remember 2020 as the time when we all had a chance to step back from the hectic life we’ve carved out for ourselves. We’ll remember the quality time we spent at home, time with our families doing things we never usually think are important. We’ll also remember the time apart from our extended families and friends and cherish the times we have with them in the future. 

 

Anyway, that’s enough of all that sentimental mush, let’s get through this with humour and humanity. One day soon, we’ll ride again.
