It’s fair to say that the last few casings/complete engines that came out of Scooters India Limited weren’t the best quality but when it’s all you can get… Well not any more because Indian manufacturer, Uni have their long-awaited 200cc Lambretta casings in production with a mid-January delivery date and we have a set for one lucky reader to win.
The casings have been designed with the help of Ray and Ben Kemp at AF Rayspeed (AF are the UK distributor for UNI) and a test batch of initial casings have been assembled and tested by different Lambretta shops. They all gave the go-ahead to start production and have confirmed orders of their own. The aim was to produce a standard style affordable engine casing with great quality and improved features, a casing that would also be a good base for further tuning and that would accept all standard type parts. It looks like they met the brief quite well. We haven’t got a retail price on the casings yet but they’re said to be very reasonable.
Uni engine casings
Although the Uni casings are designed around the original spec casings there have been some significant, yet subtle improvements made.
- UNI casings are made by High-Pressure die-cast technology using high-grade alloys and state of the art equipment. This ensures a high-quality finish, strength and dimensional accuracy to withstand long-term stress, wear and tear.
- The cylinder base surface has been slightly enlarged to match the transfer ports of performance cylinder kits. This additional material not only facilitates further tuning but also reduces the chances of damaging the casing during removal and installation of the mag flange.
- The Mag side and drive side transfer shapes have been optimized to improve their symmetry and aid smooth gas flow.
- The outside diameter of the primary compression area has been beefed up with extra aluminium. This ensures that the crank area can be bored out 4mm larger to facilitate fitment of larger diameter crank webs with longer stroke options without the risk of weakening or damaging the engine casing.
- The engine bump stop has been redesigned to ensure greater clearance for a variety of tyres without any fouling issues.
- Areas around the engine mounts have been strengthened to ensure that these can take additional stress without cracking.
- The support ribs around the gearbox end plate have been strengthened to ensure that these are not damaged while removing the end plate.
- The rear brake shoe pivot pins and the rear brake cam hole have been optimally located to ensure even application of brake shoes and improved braking performance.
- The rear brake cam lever can be easily removed and installed without removing the rear hub. Saves a lot of time and effort!
The polisher’s verdict
John Walklate has already polished UNI casings and had this to say about them “The quality of the casting and the material used is second to none for a standard casing. As an unpolished casing the finish is really impressive and thought has gone into the end product. They have even made several improvements when compared to an Innocenti item. I’ve polished a lot of casings over the years and the Uni casings are in my opinion top notch and great value for money”.

Why I deserve to win: Presently, I am running a small block engine casing and would very much like to replace it with a Uni 200cc engine to match the existing (excellent) Uni rear hub that I have been using the last 3 years.

Oh my goodness! … This is just what I need to rebuild my very tired TV200 engine in! You name it, my crankcase is suffering from it! Stripped threads, Broken exhaust stub, which resulted in a damaged chaincase cover, welded up crankcase where it threw a rod through it in its former life, after the sidecar was removed from it, it was used for racing! My poor scooter is off the road with an electrical fault, and I have another stator plate and flywheel to install to revive it, and it also needs new engine mounts, and did I mention what looks like a crack where the chaincase-side mount is located? Ho-hum! It would be so much nicer to rebuild the innards in this lovely uprated crankcase!
I bought this scooter of Messrs Tony Walsh and Tony McGee around 1969 for the grand sum of £50! (The two Tonys were known as Stow Racing Developments.) It used to take me to school, and afterwards to The City of London from Loughton each day to my first job as an Insurance clerk. After a long period of disuse, it was rebuilt as a tuned TS1 around 1995 or so by Cambridge Lambretta, and has been as much a part of my life as has Radio Caroline, which sponsors David Cornwallis in the appropriately numbered 648 Radio Caroline BMW, … and this is where things go full circle, … the same car Tony McGee ran for Tom Pead when he owned it at Nurbergring in Germany before it was sold to David. It’s a small world!

The answer to the question is : Watford. Why do I want to win these cases ?….because a lot of thought and expense has gone into producing them. I’ve just meticulously restored my Lambretta but have only put a temporary engine in it to get it on the road. These cases will give me the opportunity to build the engine that I really want. An engine built in these cases will complement my scooter and make it perfect.

To teach me that a Lammy is a viable alternative to a quick Vespa and doesnt go bang. (Plus I will send a bribe). X

parts are usualy double the price, and if you’ve ordered the wrong bit

I’m an ugly bugger, mostly because of spending years face palming and hitting my head on the garage wall asking myself “Why oh why do I love these beautiful, iconic designed and badly built Italian scooters” when trying to get poorly fitting parts with stripped threads to fit when rebuilding them. My name is terry vine and as others before me like the 80s scooterists who brought me up as a young skinhead through the 90s telling their tales of the long distance scooter runs and all the fun and turmoil that goes with the way of life we all love, i too travel 1000s of miles every season all over the UK and Europe on my lambretta chopper keeping the faith and showing my now older friends that their spirit still lives on however only having a small block engine you can imagine the constant problems I have faced through the seasons so to that end I am taking my full licence early next year and a set of these amazing casings will certainly be put to good use on the road and not be sat in someone’s garage most of the year. I’m in need of a new 200 casing as I went to Belgium in September 10 mile off the boat snapped my chain smashed a huge hole in the top of casing twisted crank but repaired it with liquid metal bent the crank back into shape with a big hammer all at the side of road and road to the rally and back home again. It’s now sat in the garage covered in oil looking sorry for its self and need to get it fixed then I can go Poland next year

The latest issue is resolved as I’ve place my hard earned cash towards xmas and ensuring my two girls have a wonderful time. Leaving Daddy to ponder a plan B. I remember the first Sil 200 casing I bought from Ray in the winter of ‘80 rode up from Chingford on my GP150 and luckily they had one in stock well pleased I rode back home and realised I’d forgotten something so had to go straight back. The guy Dave Farmer who was doing the rebuild had a GSX 1100 at the time he said he’ll run me there. He clocked up over 100mph on the M1 needless to say the journey time was halved. Anyhow I’ve recently bought a 150 Silver Special which I plan to upgrade to 200 early in the new year and the UNI casing looks like a great bit of kit especially as Ray has had some design input and those brake pins are now in the right place. The reason I should win is because my daily drive, 1965 Li 150 with jet 200 motor, is getting really tired. I’ve helicoiled all the mag housing studs, one of the exhaust stud mounts and the other I had to drill out and make an insert because it was already oversized. Its been alloy welded around the bump stop and on the gasket face and one of the rear hub flange studs has snapped off but she keeps going day after day and with these Uni casings she’ll keep going for at least another 63 years!

I would like to win as I had a bit of bad luck which lead to a rearrangment of my engine. The con rod now sits on the outside of the engine, compression is now poor!
