Madcap Austrian scooter stuntman, Günter Schachermayr completed his 20th Guinness World Record attempt on Saturday with a dangerous stunt that didn\’t go without incident or injury. For his latest stunt, Günter (the man who, amongst other things, has parachuted out of a plane, out of a balloon at 20,000 feet and bungee jumped whilst sat on his Vespa) was towed behind a 380hp powerboat whilst attached to a parachute and a 285-foot length of rope above an Austrian lake.

Mission Vespa Kite Flying

 

We\’ve all seen or done a bit of parascending whilst on holiday but launching yourself behind a high speed boat whilst sat on a Vespa is a very different kettle of fish. The scooter acts like a pendulum as it launches from the raft and it\’s a heavy lump of metal to crash down on you if things go wrong – which they did.

 

Launching with a combined weight of 145kg saw the scooter crash into the lake initially before righting itself and rising into the sky with an overjoyed rider. Günter suffered a nasty laceration to his ankle, although he didn\’t realise he was injured until the stunt was over.

Using 95 metre long ropes, designed to withstand wind forces of over 60kmh – specially made for the stunt by Teufel Berger Seil GmbH and a fast boat on full steam ahead Mission \’Vespa Kite Flying\’ was on.  the distinctive Vespa PX and its thrill-seeking rider soared above Lake Wolfgang reaching a height of 75-metres, as measured by drone. Günter travelled the full length of the lake before the wind changed, he lost the thermals and lost altitude quickly before hitting the water. Hard. Luckily Günter was able to break away from the scooter and was picked up by the safety boat but told us \”When I noticed that the wind was turning, I got scared of death. From then on it was clear what was happening and I hit the hard-hitting water!\”

 

Günter got away relatively unscathed. The scooter didn\’t get away so lightly though, it was written off in the crash, no doubt the engine is also flooded…

The video evidence and images have now been sent off to the Guinness Book of World Records for verification and hopefully, Günter will be rewarded with his 20th World Record. It\’s not the last we\’ll see of this mad man though, he\’s got bigger things planned before too long.
