At the height of the coronavirus pandemic in March, riders and drivers were granted a six-month extension to their MOT. Covid-19 restrictions are currently being lifted across most of the UK – although that is still open to change (as we’ve seen this week in Leicester and Bradford/some areas of London may follow). As it stands though, from August 1st everybody (with a vehicle that needs one by law) will be required to get an MOT test again when it’s safe to do so.
Riders/drivers with an MOT expiring before August 1st will still receive a six-month exemption, although the DVSA has stressed that all vehicles must still be well maintained and kept in a roadworthy condition. You can still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle and your insurance may well be void.
90% of garages/MOT stations are now open as ‘normal’ and you’re also able to get an MOT carried out earlier if you wish – even if you are currently exempt.
Roads Minister Baroness Vere said;
“As people return to our roads, it is vital that motorists are able to keep their vehicles safe. That’s why as restrictions are eased, MOT testing will again become mandatory.”
