You know there are certain people from our scene both past and present who are quite rightly known as legends. In February 2012, we lost a scootering legend. Most of you will have known Steve Porter as Sausage.
I had the pleasure of spending some time with Sausage around 8 years ago. He’d shown up with a bunch of other jovial souls from the Flying 8 Balls Scooter Club, for a dyno session at Diablo Moto where I was working with Alan at the time. Technically, the guy was a wizard and as I recall, every scooter he’d set up (most of them it transpires) gave very little trouble and needed minimum tweaking during the dyno.
On a personal level, Sausage was a wickedly funny chap and I liked him immensely. My ribs were aching at the end of the day through his endless quips and jokes.
Most of you will also know Dave Hampson of Scooter Trumps fame. Dave is planning a unique gathering at the Mersea Island Scooter Rally over the weekend of 1st to 3rd September 2017, to commemorate Sausage’s unique contribution to our scene.

Incredibly gifted
Sausage was an incredibly gifted mechanic, turning his hand to what ever two wheeled creation came to mind. There were of course, scooter related projects, some of which he branded “Wild Thing” which were a fusion of two or more scooters to make something new. In the main, these tended to be Lambrettas with Vespa engines, although there was a Dragster similarly modified and a early auto Lambretta series 3, as well as a TS1 Lambretta Cento.
Ermintrudes pogo stick
He had a love of real ale, which always got us talking about scooter projects. Aside from spannering and scooters, he also played bass guitar in a band called Ermintrudes Pogo Stick, playing mostly punk covers.
Scooter Techniques
Steve will be best known around the world for the narration and demonstrations he did on the Scooter Techniques DVD’s, along with the Norfolk colloquialisms he used whilst making the films.
2017 means that it has been five years since he left us to ride his scooter through those pearly gates, probably stopping en-route to borrow a bit off them to fathom a new scooter creation.

This brings me to this year’s rally at Mersea Island. We are going to gather a display of Sausage’s creations and ideas just to remind the scootering world what a gifted man he was. If your scooter is one that he created and you would like to include it in the display please contact me, Dave, at scootertrumps@hotmail.co.uk. The cut off date for entrants will be 22nd August, so we can get things organised.
