Why are we such suckers for things of beauty?
Why are we such suckers for things of beauty?

Novice Street Class racer, Kirk St Moritz is currently building his first ever race Lambretta and the search for exotic stopping power lead him to Rimini Lambretta Centre…

Choosing parts for a scooter project is fun… That is if you\’ve got deep pockets! Or a sugar daddy. I always consider the notion that you get what you pay for though. In the front brake department there are several very nice bits of kit available from radial to anti dive, single outboard to double outboard disc, billet hubs with knobs on, or the original look in-board conversion from the likes of Taffspeed, Chiselspeed or Mr Broadhurst. There’s plenty of choice to suit all budgets.

I had previously spoken to a few racers and also done a little research into disc brakes for another project so had an idea about what I was looking for. I’d looked at function in addition to aesthetics too. Obviously function over form was the priority for a racing scooter… But nevertheless I still like things to look good (a contradiction in terms if you were to ever catch a glimpse of me!).

The shortlist was whittled down to…

  • Mito disc with anti dive
  • PM tuning billet disc hub with anti-dive
  • Jockeys Boxenstop traditional looking disc hub half with outboard disc and anti-dive
  • Jason Frost’s impressive setup. Again with a traditional hub half which ran the disc central to the spindle thus giving better balance under braking – also with anti-dive

Sometimes you just have to have something.
Sometimes you just have to have something.

But the final choice came down to a chance discussion with Dean from Casa Lambretta Rimini on the subject. It transpired that they had designed produced and developed a new billet disc brake with dedicated master cylinder/switch housing mount. The Casa race team had been using the prototypes on their race bikes during the previous season and to great effect too! The idea of a race tested shiny new billet disc brake was too much for me and I quickly blurted out “Put one aside for me!\”

As it happens the production versions hadn\’t even been delivered to Dean at this point so I was in for a short wait! I SLUKin hate waiting for things!

Black beauty, a billet thing of loveliness.
