If you\’re not heading to Mersea Island this weekend and want to see 30 teams of classic scooter riders battling it out on a track for six hours non-stop then you need to get yourself to Middlesborough on Sunday (September 1st) for the Tside6. The newly formed British Scooter Endurance Club will be taking over Teeside Karting for some adrenaline-charged action.
The club was formed earlier this year by veteran scooter racer, Keith Terry after he found himself wondering why he had to go abroad to race in endurance events. Teeside Karting was chosen as a venue because it has everything a track needs and they were used to holding non-ACU governed meetings. This means potential racers don\’t need an ACU race licence to take part. This immediately opens things up to road riders and those curious about taking to the track.
We ran a story on the upcoming event back in January and the entry list soon started to fill up, with current and ex-BSSO scooter racers, road riders, rally goers and teams from Ireland and France quickly jumping on board. In fact, that\’s exactly what they\’ll do when the flag drops at 11 am on Sunday morning because it\’s a Le Mans style sprint start.
Strategy
Unlike an ordinary race meeting – usually held over 8-laps, an endurance race is more like a marathon than a sprint. Reliability, fuel stop strategies, quick rider changeovers, fast tyre changes (if needed) and consistent lap times are what\’s needed in endurance racing.
All scooters are fitted with transponders and the team with the most laps at the end of the six hours will be the winner.
Team SLUK
SLUK will be fielding a team in the Road Class (full class details later on in this feature). We\’ll be using Sticky\’s old mean matt black Vespa 90SS – \’Underdog\’. Our team will consist of lapsed 1990s group six scooter racer and ScooterLab ambassador, Shaun Hodgkin (right). Hopefully, his comedy leathers will also be making an appearance.
Shaun will be joining myself and Sticky, plus our secret weapon – Sam Round. Having just turned 18 this will be Sam\’s first \’proper\’ race event.
Team SLUKed
As I write this Sticky is busy building a new engine for \’Underdog\’. He stripped it last night to check things over and found the casings were cracked. This was at 20:26. A quick internet appeal and within 30 minutes we\’d been offered a complete Fabrizi engine, a Parmakit motor, three sets of casings and various offers to try and weld it up. The scootering community is fantastic and we were truly humbled. Thanks to everybody who offered help (we may still need you yet).
Whilst the offers were still coming in thick and fast Sticky drove to local lad Wayne Hayes and collected a set of smallframe casings he\’d dug out of his garage in the dark. Sticky\’s task today is to decide whether to have some meat welded on to them before porting them to match his Quattrini top end, or go with German tuner, eGig\’s suggestion to port them without welding (a quicker solution). Then he just has to build the complete engine, fit it, get it running, dyno it and make sure all is ok before heading up north to Teeside on Saturday for the evening practice.
The track
The 1km long kart track is fast and technical with a long back straight, tight hairpins and a sweeping 12-metre wide banked turn. An average lap time should be around 1 min 15 seconds (according to Keith Terry), so spectators will get to see lots of action. With six hours of non-stop racing they should be sick of the sound and smells of screaming two-strokes by 5pm.

Race Class
These scooters are prepared for racing, most will have no lights and will not be road legal. They will be tuned and fitted with uprated suspension and brakes. Some will have modifications like a larger fuel tank to run in this endurance race. The normal playground for these scooters will be at BSSO meetings here in the UK and the endurance and ESC races in Europe. This class is open to all riders.
