Bodge: Verb
A case of make do and mend, not done properly – done in an ‘It’ll do fashion.‘ Typically seen at its best on main routes to the seaside, performed by scooterists at the roadside.
Examples
1: Snapped throttle cable tied around foot and pulled to go faster.
2: Torch taped to headset to replace headlight.
3: Exhaust held on by bungees after bracket snaps.
4: Twig whittled to fashion new throttle tube…
We’ve all been there at one time or another, something breaks on our way to a rally and we’re left with either a long wait for an ever-increasingly unreliable recovery service or performing some minor miracle using only what we can fashion, adapt or sacrifice in a vain effort to get us on the road again.
Wayne Gowing found himself with an unusual problem whilst out with the lads and I’m sure many of you have stories of your own to share. If you’ve got a photo to go with it even better, even grainy old images or rubbish quality old phone images.
Here’s Wayne’s top bodge…
Me and a few mates were out and about … my mate Jason Atkinson said ‘Watch the next bend it’s got a new loose surface on it.’ So I went into the bend showing off a bit and as I banked it over my throttle tube snapped and came away from the handlebar. I stayed on the scoot thankfully. However it took a bit of a bodge to get it sorted. We found an old branch at the side of the road and whittled it down to use as a throttle. Then we hammered it in, wrapped a bit of electrical tape around it and it was as good as new… well sort of but it got me home.
