The DVSA have announced a public consultation period into proposals to change the rules for CBT training and the motorcycle test process.

The changes may include the following:

  • Six penalty point limit on a CBT
  • Restricted to an auto if you do a CBT on an auto
  • Four part CBT syllabus
  • Theory test before CBT
  • Digital training to improve record keeping

The DVSA also want your views on the possibility to take ‘progressive action’ training to upgrade a licence, rather than extra tests. This proposal could be a good way to encourage people to gain a full licence rather than taking the ‘easy’ option of repeated CBTs. Surely a well trained rider is much safer than one who half heartedly repeats the same CBT syllabus every two years?

Improvements to the way instructors gain qualifications and a new system of checks on training schools are also being considered to improve the quality and consistency of training. A good trainer can turn a novice into a safe rider for life, rather than simply training pupils to pass a test.
