Approx 70 or so motorcycles of all shapes, sizes and ages were entered into the Oliver’s Mount Race Circuit Hillclimb on Sunday 8th October. Vintage bikes, classic bikes, modern sports bikes and a few supermoto/motocross bikes thrown in for good measure make for a good spectacle!
But those of us with good taste really turned up to cheer on the four Lambretta riders competing. They were all flying the flag and helping to promote the ‘Scooters on the Mount’ side of the hillclimb events.
The competitors race up part of Scarborough’s legendary Oliver’s Mount road race circuit. It is an anticlockwise track, which is very rare in racing. The bit the hillclimb sprint uses, starts in the area normally used for the pits and finishes at the top of the main hill – the highest point on the track.
The riders go up one at a time with a 30 second or so delay, which makes for constant flowing action. The bikes go in category order – classic, then modern and in different capacity limits too.

Who: South West Scooter Clubs
What: Scooter Rally
Where: Devon Valley Holiday Park, Teignmouth
When: April 15th-17th
Why: A new exciting event in a lovely part of the world
The scooter scene has become stagnant of late, the same towns on the same dates year in year out. Rallies unchanged in many cases for nigh on 20 years. Groundhog Day springs to mind. Thankfully there are still new things to do, new places to visit and Teignmouth was one such event.
Hosted by those black shirted tattooed freaks of the South West Scooter Clubs and held in a stunning location beside the estuary with everything on site you could want, plus a fine smattering of pubs just a ferry ride away (yes a ferry could take you to the other side of the estuary) this was just what the scene needed. With just 750 places available on site the event accommodation sold out faster than a One Direction gig and it meant it was slightly more exclusive than a national rally and gave it a chilled out vibe.
Time was tight for me so I only made it down for the Saturday, battling through heavy snow, freezing temperatures and rain to get to the sunshine of the south west. Reports were that Friday night was fantastic with indie covers band Marquis Drive kicking ass in the main room. We’d sent some of our stickers down and they were well abused, judging by the photos sent to us by Shelley Evett everything that moved was sticker bombed (Shelley also won best of show for her lovely DTC Lambretta).
Arriving just after the custom show finished we spent a chilled out sunshine filled Saturday afternoon with one of the best live bands around (if you like big slapping double bass and frenetic guitar and drums) – the Rocker Covers never fail to impress and had the bar packed. Saturday night saw the Simmertones providing a ska fuelled set to keep the pork pie hat brigade happy but I missed them unfortunately due to an unscheduled late night caravan party with a few friends.
Sunday arrived and we blasted home wondering if we’d ever stop this crazy lifestyle, 476 miles ridden for a night out. Was it worth it? Hell yeah. Would we do it again? Every weekend.

Sticker bombing
On Friday night news reached us of a serious incident at Teignmouth. ScooterLab stickers were being abused in serious fashion. Anything that could be adhered to was sticker bombed, it’s not big and it’s not clever. We received these secret spy shots so thought we’d better share them. Thanks to our undercover agent, Mrs Evett for bringing this to our attention and we apologise if you were affected by this incident.
