The final piece of the CasaCase jigsaw has been released today. The seven-plate, X33R PowerMaster clutch with internal cushdrive is designed for all tuned Lambretta engines and features twelve springs and a choice of 47T or 48T crown wheels. It can be used on ALL Italian, Spanish or Indian Lambretta engines, as well as the new generation CasaCases, Gran Turismo and Misano cases (albeit using a 1cm spacer or CasaCover).
Why use a cushdrive?
Most motorcycles have used a cushdrive for years to reduce the ‘shock’ to the gearbox during quick gear changes or harsh riding. Innocenti also tried a similar system on the Series 1&2 models. The new Casa Performance clutches use rubber ‘buffer’ rings to dissipate the shock, the rubbers are specifically designed for cushdrive use.
The Casa Clutch is based on a BSG designed cush drive clutch, this system has been perfected for use in the Casa Performance SSR250 and SSR265 Scuderia engines, which put out 47bhp as standard.
How many springs?
Each clutch comes supplied with 12 springs and the number of springs can be reduced to suit your engine, for example, an SSR265 Scuderia will need 12 springs to harness the 46bhp on tap, whereas a 10bhp Mugello 186 will probably only need four springs.
Different versions?
The PowerMaster is available in 47T and 48T crownwheel sizes, the actual toothed crownwheels can be swapped over and changed, they’re also available to buy separately. 46-tooth clutches weren’t possible to manufacture due to the physical diameter of the cushdrive clutch basket, it was too close to the crownwheel teeth to be comfortable. Although Casa assures us that that won’t be a problem as the effect on gearing between 46T, 47T and 48T is minimal. With the Casa Performance X44 OTT top chain guide chain length and adjustment won’t be an issue either.
Access
Dismantling a PowerMaster Cushdrive clutch is as easy as removing the central ‘Thrust bearing’ disc, giving you access to the 22mm main clutch nut, no compressor tool is needed. The high-quality Thrust Bearing system has been used to cure problems found with some other aftermarket clutches, where the central button would sometimes lock up due to excess heat build up.
Plug ‘n’ play?
The PowerMaster clutch is 1cm taller than a standard Lambretta clutch so if fitting to a standard (or aftermarket) casing you’ll need to either use a CasaCover engine sidecasing (which will give you the added benefit of a superlight clutch) or use a 10mm spacer.
Cost?
Ok, it was never going to be cheap, this is an all-singing, all-dancing clutch designed for use in a high-power motor, where harnessing that power is paramount to getting the most out of your new fan-dangled engine. It’s designed for and made specifically for the Lambretta in Italy and will cost €599.
