At a recent BSSO race meeting at Darley Moor we asked the Casa Lambretta boys what clutch they used in their scooters.
Following a poor outing at Mallory Park both Luca Fuschini and Luca Zani\’s race scooters were returned to Italy and given more tuning in order to tackle the power of Replay Racing\’s streamlined racer piloted by 2015 champ Darren Conneely.
The work seems to have paid off because now the Italians are romping ahead. When questioned about the output of their (still fan-cooled) SS200 and SS225-based engines, all Mickey would say was \”over 40hp\”.
The surprise then is that this power is being handled by a commonly available clutch that fits without a packer. The clutch is a BGM 6-plate which is based on the normal Lambretta layout rather than motorcycle style plates, however the BGM plates used are a sintered modern compound rather than traditional cork.
The main modification made for race use is to fit different steel plates and to lightly grind the surface for more grip. One set of plates survived a whole season of this abuse in the ESC series and two rounds of the BSSO series before the ears of the plates started to burr over significantly. With the way these boys ride, that\’s not much to complain about.
