British motorcycle safety pioneers and innovators, Knox have been busy developing some new super-strong, extra-lightweight and very adaptable body armour. Their new Micro-Lock armour will be available early next year and is designed, as the name suggests, to be soft and supple in ordinary use (even in extremes of hot or cold temperatures) but the molecules lock on impact to offer the best protection.
Ordinary armour has to be quite thick to absorb the energy of an impact but with the SMART technology employed by Micro-Lock it can be much thinner so isn’t as bulky to wear but still offers better levels of protection than your usual old-school body armour. The tagline for Smart-Lock is Smart.Soft.Stable. and with the Knox approach to good looking, functional and safe riding equipment we expect it to do exactly what it says on the tin.
Knox highlights
Knox are well known for being ahead of the game when it comes to motorcycle safety and (amongst many achievements) they’re cited as the first company to produce a back protector. We’re all so used to wearing kit with integrated armour that it’s hard to imagine a time when it wasn’t available, to road riders or racers but their first Pro-Tek back protector only arrived in 1982.
In 1988 the man behind Knox, Geoff Travell won an award for the best safety product for becoming the first company to introduce a garment with integral body armour.
1995 saw the Cumbrian based firm become the first brand to achieve CE certification for motorcycle body armour, followed by gaining CE approval the following year for their back protector – another first.
Although the Knox Studio Collection is pretty new and features a layering system, Knox launched their first modular style clothing range back in 1997. Way ahead of their time.
2009 saw the introduction of their revolutionary hand armour gloves, complete with patented Scaphoid Protection System and a unique external skeleton design.
2016 sees them introduce the Micro-Lock armour and if you’re visiting Motorcycle Live later this month you’ll no doubt be able to see it in action on the Knox stand.
