The official do, use it or lose it…
The final National Rally of the year had arrived and the season has certainly flown by this year, a sign of having too good a time?
For me a combination of going to a gig and having no digs meant we would miss the Friday night shenanigans. So it was an early start on Saturday morning for the six of us as we set off for the ride up hill to Bridlington. We were on a mission to ensure that we could get one of our group, Scott Southon, to the Spa, not because he needed a bit of a make over… but because he was competing in the BSRA as Best Supporting Male Member (no that doesn’t mean he can carry a lot of weight on his todger!) and he had to sign on by midday.
Best loser
Mission accomplished with time to spare, but sadly despite attending every National Rally again this year he missed out on mileage by the narrowest of margins (just one mile) to Jason Ude, with Scott second, or first loser as he was reminded a few times later on in true supportive scooterist humour.

Young blood
It was great to see one of the young scooterists, Jamie Lawn, finishing a well deserved third place after attending all of the rallies ‘the long way round’ as he’s still riding on ‘L’ plates.
The ladies championship was also hard fought with previous winner Ann Murphy in third, Nadine Ridge in second & Vicki Swinge retaining the title after her win last year.
The Club trophy went to the London Lambretta Club again, they get everywhere, literally! Well done to all those that support and sponsor the BSRA championship. If you attend the National Rallies then why not sign up and give it a go?

LCGB Trade and Custom show
After a good look around the trade areas inside the LCGB Trade and Custom show it was clear the stalls were busy. With the full range of new and used spares, clothes, badges, etc. available as is the norm at this event.
Even so, it’s always an impressive sight when you look over the balcony and see all of the scooters on the main arena floor below. The standard of scooters entered was very high and a great variety of full-blown customs, choppers, restorations, race replicas & race scooters, etc. The Luna display was excellent and the trick Series 1 from JB Tuning (below) had a lot of people drooling.
Several race scooters and riders were about as well to promote next year’s BSSO season. My words won’t do the impressive line up justice so best I shut up and let you look at the photos and the custom show results below.
Number ones Meeting
Aside from the rally itself, Bridlington also hosts the ‘Number Ones’ meeting where the main organisers of scooter rallies and organisations get together to discuss the calendar and agree which events are to have National status next year. No major surprises other than the October rally, which was announced as T.B.C…
After a few people had Googled to see where that was it soon sunk in that there could be a change on the cards, time will tell.
We aren’t the Mods
A quick freshen up at our digs and then we were off out for a few glasses of wobble juice. The pubs around town were busy, many had put on music and live bands, playing what they perceive as “scooterist” music, however whilst this may appeal to many, not all scooterists want to hear the same stuff over and over again, so there was also a pub crawl around the old town that proved popular amongst many regular rally going scooterists looking for a drink away from the crowded pubs.
Saturday afternoon became Saturday evening, with a spam fritter and chips soaking up a bit of the JD ready for Saturday night’s merriment. A trip around a few more of the pubs, catching up with old mates and we found ourselves in the Pavilion bar, our drinks were hastily drunk though as the band started with a chorus of “We are the mods”… we left because we aren’t.
We always support the official dos on the National Rallies, as without the official organisers we wouldn’t have the rally in the first place. So we headed back to the Spa. It’s a huge venue and with several rooms it can hold a lot of people (3,000). The main room was buzzing and the band were playing a great set of indie and popular covers, the dance floor was busy and this continued after their very long encore, with DJs keeping a lot of people on their feet.
The Darkside Room was entertaining those with a passion for dance tunes and along with the ska/reggae room & soul room we were spoilt for choice. The clocks going back meant a bonus hour of drinking & dancing before the night and the National Rally season came to a close.
Will we be back again?
To Be Confirmed
The next day discussions turned to the rally ‘To Be Confirmed’ for next October. Was this the last Bridlington? One thing is for sure we are seeing more towns welcoming us as the cash we inject in to their local economy is huge! How times change.
The town may have become complacent about the rally, taking it for granted that we’ll turn up no matter what. Have they bitten the hand that feeds it by turning it in to a themed weekender? Many pubs put on a band or do in direct competition to the main do in the Spa.
Fewer numbers through the door of the do, potentially means a loss for the organisers. The Spa is a big venue and can’t be cheap to hire. Is it time to have a change, if so where to? It’s easy for us punters to believe the ‘There’s loads of places out there’ discussions. That’s the problem, there aren’t that many towns that can cater for the size of custom show & evening dos that such an event requires, this is the same for a National Rally. It’s a constant battle for the organisers, some punters want change and new venues. Well where? Southport is a possibility after a successful pre-season rally earlier this year, but where else? If you know of a venue and a town that you think is suitable then let us know in the comments below. I’m sure the VFM & BSRA team would be interested, especially if you have contacts with venues, etc.
Cast in stone?
The future
Social media is rife with rumour over the reasons for the T.B.C. but just think if you had to pay out to organise a venue, DJs, bands, promotion, discuss with councils, insurance, police, etc. and then had others jump on the back of your hard work and tempt people away. You’ve done all the work and end up losing money, is it viable? We saw something similar at Cleethorpes this year, but the word went round and many boycotted the bars, the same thing started to happen down in Exmouth, but thankfully the pubs listened to the organisers and a good working relationship has been established. Maybe the pubs in Bridlington (and other rally towns) need to take note.
Maybe we are at a crossroads as there are more scooterists asking for scooter only events to break away from the themed weekenders that the pubs are creating on the back of our rallies. Maybe we also need to look at ourselves and not take for granted those that put in all of the hard work for us to enjoy ourselves on the rallies.

100 scooters in a custom show is an overwhelming sight. There is just too much to take in, for me anyway. Scooters of all shapes, sizes and styles – we certainly bring some colour to the roads, that is a fact. It’s easy to get lost in the crazy paint schemes, or gold and chrome plating, engineering masterpieces, and some scoots I just wouldn’t set off to the shops on. If you can think it up, I bet someone has already built it, and is already on with a mark 2 version! My unsung heroes in the show are the subtle looking bikes that have had epic journeys, like the Salvin family Vegas, A dad and lad riding team that rode from London to Italy for a rally – In any other walk of life the NSPCC would get involved!

There was also a Serveta built to ride across what is essentially a desert and teams of racing scooters that have achieved unthinkable speeds and reliability around race circuits where many motorcycles fail. Where else would you find a fully customised 3-wheeler sidecar outfit? Scooter rallies that’s where. Custom scooters such as Rule Britannia, The Beast and Lower Class are just three of the bikes that have entered every National Rally custom show this year, they’re my favourites right there, for that very reason. They look just as cool loaded up with luggage on a petrol station forecourt as they do sparkling in a show. 70 years ago the Piaggio and Innocenti families didn’t have a clue what they were about to start did they…

Many farewells to another rally season are said at Brid, but to be honest it’s hard to work out where one season starts and another finishes these days, I left Brid with memories of another superb year of journeys and the 2018 rally dates, I can’t wait…

After the Number Ones meeting, the final rally date for next year (normally Brid) said T.B.C. – To be Confirmed? To be Continued? To be Cancelled? Who knows… All I do know for sure is loads of you reading this will be wherever it is, doing the right thing, supporting it, LONG LIVE THE NATIONAL SCOOTER RALLY…

What a rally! Reggae room, great bands, super custom show and friendly Yorkshire folk. We make the journey over from the Emerald Isle every year and it was the best one yet. I can understand the accommodation issues, we’ve had them ourselves but we’ll miss it if it’s over. We find it a very welcoming town and every year we’ve done it different. Even managed to buy alot of small parts which work out great value without having to pay postage. Well done to the organisers. If it was the last one it finished on a high.
